Personality & Traits

General Overview Ryon has a complicated relationship with the Prophets to say the least. Coming of age under occupation and the destruction wrought in the final days of the Dominion War left him with the view that the Prophets are really only Wormhole Aliens. He views it as a person’s duty to forge their own destiny.

With that, he takes pride in his career and in his place in the center chair. A favorite quote of his is “Risk is part of the business.” Ryon doesn’t take blind risks, but knows the value of pushing the envelope.
Strengths & Weaknesses Ryon has spent a career as a leader, starting with the Dominion War. He is open to ideas and not particularly beholden to tradition. He views his rough start to life as blessing in disguise. However, he often finds himself as a man without a home. He’s open to bouts of depression and feelings of self-doubt.
Ambitions All in all, his motivation is to help foster peace in the sector. It is a state of things that he has almost never seen.
Hobbies & Interests Springball, Studying Quadrant Religions and Philosophy, Testing himself in tactics on the holodeck, and "Roughing it" through camping trips in inhospitable environments.

History

Personal History Ryon was born in the Rakantha Provence of Bajor during the Cardassian Occupation. His parents served the Bajoran Resistance as co-leaders of their own cell, meeting both the spiritual and military needs of the people. Because the cell was operated from below the monastery, both Ryon and his sister were given a proper education by the priests above. They got a monastic education as well as learned more practical elements such as rudimentary engineering and the proper care of weapons. It was learned early on in the Occupation that even children would have to contribute in order for the Resistance to survive.

By the time he was 16, Ryon had participated in his first mission for the resistance. It was an intel gathering mission, that was fortunately uneventful. While being an operative, Ryon learned unconventional warfare and learned how to predict security patrols, both of which would aid him in his Starfleet career. During the same year, the Occupation began to ease as the Cardassians were losing more and more ground to the Federation. Having given up his faith in the Prophets and feeling the need to leave home, Ryon applied to Starfleet on his eighteenth birthday.

Ryon was accepted into Starfleet and moved to San Francisco to get away from it all. While on Earth, he dove into his studies as well as met with all sorts of cultures represented in the Federation’s capital. He chose to go through the Tactical and Security path as he had experience and thought it would allow him to make his own mark.

The peace he had long sought was not given to him. Almost as soon as he entered his third year, the Dominion War broke out with his homeworld as focal point. Seeing many of those who graduated before him on the casualty reports, Ryon doubled his efforts to graduate. He was assigned the Akira-class USS Yokohama as a Tactical Officer. His first missions were filled with away team firefights as well as assisting with training. He was able to use Bajoran Resistance hit-and-run techniques during ground fighting to great effect.

Due to the high rates of attrition throughout the fleet and his performance, Ryon was promoted to Lieutenant JG and Assistant Chief Tactical Officer. As the Beta-shift Bridge Officer, Ryon saw his share of ship-to-ship combat. The Yokohama was part of some relatively small victories and successful tactical retreats during the middle phases of the war, mostly evacuations and escort missions.

However, this luck would not last. During an attack run behind enemy lines, the Yokohama was boarded by Jem’hadar raiders. In the ensuing firefight, many of the Department Heads were killed, including the Chief Tactical Officer. It was at this time, Ryon was field promoted to fill the seat after the crew fought off the invaders.

The Yokohama was present in the liberation of the Kalandra System as well as helping the fledgling Cardassian rebellion in a few minor skirmishes. The Yokohama took part in the Invasion of Cardassia. During the battle, Ryon took pity on those in whom he had grown up to view as demons. By war’s end, he had become a decorated hero, and yet was more confused about who he thought that he was.

Shortly after the signing of the Treaty of Bajor, the Yokohama was decommissioned due to the extensive damage it had received in the battle. For the moment, his life was free from war and ugliness. He took the moment to try to reconnect with his family and his spiritual roots. He felt in some ways less connected to his family, especially his father and sister mostly because of the realization that their views were no longer compatible with his own.

For his next assignment, Ryon was assigned to the Intrepid-class USS Odyssey as the Chief Tactical/Security Officer. Fortunately, the Odyssey was given back-to-back five year exploratory missions. This allowed Ryon to really dig into why he had originally joined Starfleet, to seek out new life and new civilizations. The Odyssey took part in many surveying missions, made official first contact with 19 species, and charted numerous new star systems.

Instead of being offered his own ship, Ryon was then given an instructor position at Starfleet Academy. Due to his experience, he taught battle tactics and survival classes to the cadets on the Command Path. He even got to administer the dreaded Kobayashi Maru to prospective cadets.

Ryon always had an eye to return to space and always wanted a shot at the center chair. That opportunity came when he was handed the brand new USS Rhea, Starfleet’s newest Luna-class vessel.
