| General Overview | Jake has always been driven by his morals: with a strong sense of right and wrong and strong aversion to injustice, from a young age he has always sought to stick up for the ‘little guy’ - something he found easier being a head taller than most other kids his age. As time has gone on, Jake has developed a little bit of a calm and reserved persona, earning him the nickname 'Papa Bear' to those who get close enough. He tends not to scream and shout, but rather gently act to defuse potential problems. Thick-skinned and loyal, most of those he works with think of him as a protective big brother figure who has his friends back and doesn’t give up too easily. Easily one of the most level-headed people one would be likely to meet, his thick skin and clarity of thinking is vital in a pinch. Ever since an odd mind-transfer experience with another member of the Mary Rose crew, Jake's personality has subtly shifted; becoming a little more pragmatic and even a little paranoid at times. He has also been known to curse in Rihannsu without even realising it. |

History
| Personal History | The older of two brothers growing up on a Federation colony, life had always been fairly comfortable for Jake. His father was a Federation diplomat - though he was a glorified clerk who travelled a lot for very little gain. Jake and his brother Jack learned to be fairly self-sufficient, not really settling down or making new friends due to their family moving around a lot. When their mother got sick, his father took early retirement on Earth and Jake found himself at a loose end. He and his brother both joined Starfleet Academy, where Jack took a command path and excelled, while Jake himself struggled to make much of a name for himself and scraped through in the lower quartile of his class. After 18 months serving on a border patrol cruiser, Jake decided to reassess his choices and ended-up leaving Starfleet for something new. Finding that his earlier restless lifestyle was much more comfortable than the day-to-day routine of a Starfleet vessel, Jake became something of a journeyman. He found work and passage on various freighters and non-aligned ships, many independent captains finding the heavy-set human useful as occasional muscle or handy as a deckhand. His last job working as a bouncer in a Ferengi-run bar ended poorly, and Jake found himself at a loose end and looking for work. Spotting a job opening on the SS Mary Rose, Jake found himself revisiting some of his old Starfleet memories from a very different perspective. After some time working on board and making friends with the crew, Jake was offered the First Mate role. It didn't take him long to accept, having finally found a place to call 'home' and a group of people who felt more like family than anywhere else he had worked. |
