History
Personal History | Born on Kesseelia Prime’s Vsylien archipelago, Sparo is the younger of twin sons born to marine agriculturist Atraena Soubretti. He was never told who his father was. He and his brother Lanciare grew up exploring the picturesque islands near their home. As they got older, the twins were offered operatic training. Lanciare had the deep bass/baritone voice preferred in masculine roles, while Sparo had a melodic countertenor’s range that often put him at odds with potential roles. Add to that Sparo’s tall, masculine appearance and frustrations began to emerge. Eventually, Lanciare suggested to a particularly shrewd director that Sparo be a “background singer”, helping the Prima Donna who was beautiful but lacked clarity and technical ability. Practice after practice, the director lowered the Prima’s audio and slowly mixed it with Sparo’s. Opening night saw her muted and replaced by Sparo’s voice entirely. He was placed out of the audience’s sight but nearby to watch her visual clues. No longer allowed the famed dramatic death after a show’s final aria, prima’s had a much longer career, so this became a nightly routine. Never one for the shadows, Sparo was ill content to watch the cast take their bows and curtain calls. During the final show of the season, Sparo stepped on stage. He walked in front of the Prima and bowed to the audience before repeating “her” signature Leitmotif with even more colorotura and ornamentation. Rather than the cheers and applause he expected, the crowd began booing, feeling like they had been deceived by such an elaborate ruse. The cast also turned their backs on Sparo, who had cast a shadow over all of their careers. Even Lanciare would have nothing to do with his twin. Months of rejection and disappointment, if he was even allowed to audition. Sparo soon realized he was never going to make it on Kesseelia as an Opera singer. He would have to take a real job for a while, allow the bad publicity to die down, and return to singing when he had enough Latinum to reinvent himself. He drifted through a few jobs before falling in with a Magna-Roman cargo shipping company that seemed to pay too much. He was given the title of Cargo Security Chief and enough freedom to do as he liked on the long journeys. The routes were often convoluted and involved dropping out of warp, changing heading, and then warping away in the new direction. He was told that this was to avoid pirates. The pay made more sense now. One day, he was awoken from a nap by the ship coming under fire. Entering the bridge, he was shocked to find Ferengi attacking the freighter. A moment later he was shoved out of the bridge and told to secure the cargo. Finally curious, Sparo opened a container to find Felicium and another which held particle beam rifles. His shock was furthered by the three Ferengi who beamed into the cargo hold, phasers in hand. Trembling hands gingerly lifted a rifle from the crate and quietly pressed the fire button. That’s the day Sparo learned the value of combat preparedness and checking one’s weapons. From there, over the next few years he became proficient in combat and more importantly, learned how to become an arms dealer. Selling weapons from Balancar to New Zoroastria, Sparo began accumulating the wealth he sought. |
