Personality & Traits
General Overview | Caden Walker is an able crewmember who, despite dedication and commitment to his job, remains very much an enigma to his shipmates. Most over the years have found him hard-working and dependable, capable of completing his tasks in a timely and efficient fashion. Yet, they also view him as distant and reserved (especially regarding himself). The few who have managed to get to know him say he is understanding and empathetic, with deep concern for the vulnerable and the overlooked. Walker prefers to hover around the edges rather than be the center of attention. He does little to draw attention to himself (and, indeed, seems to actively shun it), preferring to dress more simply and to avoid standing out in a crowd. Likewise, he is smarter and wiser than he lets on, but is rarely the first to speak up (unless directly asked). This apparent lack of initiative (more than anything else) has hampered upward mobility, though if that fact bothers him, he hasn't let on. |

History
Personal History | The secret that Walker guards (with his very life) is that he is an xB (i.e. former Borg). Born to parents Raeburn and Alayna Walker at the Federation colony on Ivor Prime, he was assimilated along with all the colony’s inhabitants in November 2373. That cube continued on its way toward Sector 001, but not before sending one of its support vessels back toward the Delta Quadrant with many of the newly assimilated drones on board (Walker and his parents among them). Walker spent the next five years in a state of artificial growth and development, his mind and body being transformed into that of a suitable drone. As the final maturation cycle was nearing completion, it was interrupted by the neurolytic pathogen released by the Voyager crew in December 2377. The maturation chamber did protect him from the virus itself, but the failure of the cube’s systems and of the other drones led to premature emergence. It was only the timely intervention of a Starfleet vessel that resulted in Walker’s rescue and eventual reclamation. Unfortunately, the transition back to the life of an individual was…less than smooth. Not only was it overwhelming to have been cut off from the Collective, but the acceleration of his maturation (as well as his lack of connections to his past life) made reintroduction to surviving family members difficult. This was further exacerbated by lingering resentment of and stigma towards the Borg. Within only a few weeks of being released to extended family, Walker ‘ran away’, deciding to strike out on his own rather than continuing to try to force a square peg into a round hole. Walker’s experience, particularly in the first few months, was mixed. Although some he encountered welcomed him and were genuine in their efforts to help him claim his own identity, many others took advantage of him (or were outright hostile toward him). This, combined with the experience of having lived with his relatives, taught him to keep his guard up and to maintain a tough outer shell. He quickly learned that keeping his head down and not drawing attention was the best way to ensure survival. |
