Hair Color Brown
Eye Color Black
Physical Description Jherynn is tall, fit and reasonably imposing. His bearing is a mixture of Betazoid formality and a cavalier sort of carelessness that comes from being of a Noble House. His hair is lengthier than convention would dictate of a representative of a Ruling House, but not unkempt.

His wardrobe includes primarily pressed slacks, button-down shirts, ties, blazers and the occasional ceremonial robes when necessity calls for such. In his role as a counselor he often forgoes the Starfleet uniform in favor of his own attire.

Given that Betazed is a half a gravity differential below Earth, Jherynn is somewhat weaker than a Terran and has less mass than an adult male of equivalent height in many other humanoid species. This is not enough to require equalizer bracelets in M1 environments, but it does make him light.

Personality & Traits

General Overview "Supposedly, going to war initiates you into this gnostic priesthood of people who've had a liminal experience forever separating them from civilians. Except you go there, and it is what it is. A form of human activity as varied as any other." — Candid Conversations, Phil Klay

Jherynn Lan is pronounced Jare-,inn Lan (as in land). He is part of the Fifth House of Betazed, the House of Nobility. He was born on Rixx, Betazed's capital, and has lived a life of wealth and prominence. While Jherynn is highly empathetic, he is truly Betazoid and speaks with candor that many find impolite.

He received his education at the University of Betazed, primarily studying interstellar law and interstellar relations, and entered the Betazed Foreign Service at a young age. He received wider notoriety and prominence for his role as prosecutor during the San Francisco Trials of Sariza, Kelfar, Nazreen and Tallak, four Dominion officers who were publicly tried for crimes of aggression in the Interstellar Criminal Court.

As a therapist, Jherynn's specialty is post traumatic stress disorder, combat and neurological rehabilitation, but he has been known to advise his commanding officer on a variety of cultural, legal and diplomatic issues as they appear relevant to the conversation.
Strengths & Weaknesses With a strong sense of justice, burgeoning from a young age, Jherynn is first and foremost an activist. Decisive. Invigorating & lively. Sharp, quick-thinker. Comes equipped with a variety of contacts across the Federation and beyond.

He speaks with typical Betazoid candor, which can come across as impolite, though he does not try to use honesty as an excuse for cruelty, it has taken a period of Federation integration to learn where those lines are. While many people call 'passion' a trait of good-standing, in Jherynn it is amplified so much so that he will struggle to make the point that he is right even after he's realized the argument is over.

Jherynn dislikes convalescence although he continues to struggle with the effects of his stroke-and is a medical professional, he is not a very compliant patient and will often scoff and dismiss the necessity of his own medical care. He rarely if ever takes his medication.
Ambitions Jherynn would like to see the Hent Tevren Center continue its successes and for patients to come to renown it as a place of healing and tranquility from the horrors that haunt the collective Betazoid consciousness. He frequently undertakes causes involving personal issues for him, taking up arms in defense of children, the treatment of war veterans, and the structural Betazoid economic crisis that continues to permeate their planet to this day.
Hobbies & Interests Architecture, history, soap operas, reading, music (singing, composing).
Sexual Orientation Pansexual.
Language(s) Spoken Nayah, Betali, Federation Standard, Cardassian, Dominionese.

History

Personal History Born Jherynn Deshar, he was genetically bonded to Senari Lan as a child. As was often the case in such instances, their bond grew mutually deep over the years, and weathered many trials and tribulations as a result of their station. A Representative of the Council of Ruling Houses at Rixx, Jherynn had a long and distinguished career as a diplomat, to which he was groomed for since he was a young child still learning the Tying of Ropes and Knots to hone his psionic Awakening.

Jherynn lost a significant portion of his family during the Battle of Betazed and suffered a stroke himself during the assault. All who participated in the offensive against the Dominion received a Medal of Valor presented by the CRHR, though Jherynn keeps his stored in its glass box on his shelf, along with those of his daughters who each received one posthumously.

While he was reluctant to remarry, pressure from his family to pick up and carry on in the wake of their loss made it hard to ignore his duties and he engaged to Catia five years after Senari's death. They married a while later, but have not produced any children-though she wants to, he has held off on doing so out of obligation. They've fostered on and off over the years instead.
Service Record Diplomatic career

Perhaps most renowned for helping to establish the Hent Tevren Rehabilitation Center for people who have suffered telepathic trauma, named for the famed Betazoid serial killer who helped unite his people in a telepathic offensive to drive the Dominion out. This offensive caused many Betazoids who participated to be permanently brain damaged and the HTRC was there to mitigate those consequences. HTRC now accepts patients with other degrees of mental trauma from a wide range of species.

Having a background in law, and an active legal degree from the University of Betazed on the planet's capital, Jherynn acted as an appointed prosecutor in the highly publicized San Francisco Trials, during his second year of Starfleet Medical Academy. These trials saw the conviction of four prominent Dominion officials for their actions at Karalia whereby they ordered a group of Jem'Hadar soldiers to fire on a planetary facility of non-combatant medics, patients, and children. The verdict returned was guilty. Jherynn's recommendation, that they be executed, was vetoed by all members of the ruling body of the Federation Council, and all four individuals currently reside in the ICC prison complex offshoot of Mount Cook, New Zealand.

Many on Betazed struggled with the implications that one of their own had advocated for death. During his diplomatic career, Jherynn was involved in the task force to combat Syndicate Sentience Trafficking, improving Federation Articles on the treatment of post-war Starfleet veterans and establishing better medical facilities for them, and was known as a swift and deliberate negotiator. Despite his flaws and his tactics, Jherynn was known for one thing and one thing only: obtaining results.

Starfleet

At age 39 Jherynn was commissioned as a Starfleet officer following the end of the Dominion war, desiring to jump into the Federation Fleet and render aid and assistance where he could. The move was beyond lateral given that he came at this from the perspective of a diplomat with a distinguished history. While his remaining family chastised the maneuver as sudden and inexplicable, Jherynn was unwavering.

Diplomacy had outlived its usefulness, in his opinion. He'd been a man of action then, and action now necessitated trading in one set of pips for another.

After entering Starfleet Academy, Jherynn studied neurological and psychological rehabilitation during his time in medical school and obtained a doctorate with a hefty dose of reasonable accommodation of his own given his own traumatic brain injury, and wrote his thesis on the reintegration of war veterans into civilian life. He started from the bottom, right as a cadet freshman grade, and has since-in the 22 years following-garnered a reputation as an effective, to-the-point counselor.

Medical

The telepathic assault against the Dominion caused Jherynn to suffer two major strokes, which affected his frontal and occipital lobes. This results in disinhibition, impulsivity, emotional lability, and occasionally outbursts of misplaced temper. He is diagnosed with cortical visual impairment and intermittent explosive disorder, and requires the use of a specialized touch PADD to orient himself in space and navigate his environment.
