629 words - 1.3 OF Standard Post Measure

Hal had just left his department heads office with his marching orders. He couldn't wait to follow them. After all, Hal was the poster child for "youthfulness" . Also he was always game to help out a fellow officer, which his orders stated. After a semi long walk he arrived at Cassie's door. He rang the chime.

Cassie sighed as she settled into her new quarters. She hated the bareness of the room and her room mate was a much older Vulcan Lieutenant who had told her she didn't do visitors in the shared space. She sat down defeated for a moment on the couch, what she wouldn't do for her old bunk in the Academy even with the small shared space, it had never felt as lonely as the Ishimura felt right then. "Come in." She called.

Hal did just that. Looking around he saw Cassie seated nearby Must be her. He thought. "Excuse me, my Name is Hal Detan. Commander Tucker sent me. Something about phaser quals?" He said, fulfilling his orders. He could see that she was lonely. No reason I can't kill two birds with one stone. He thought.

"Yeah, I failed them," Cassie said bitterly as she rose from the couch feeling more miserable now that someone else knew how badly she had failed in hitting the marks. "I'm Ensign McAvoy." She didn't know any of the crew yet only having reported in, done one shift and she was hating it so far.

"I'm just the messenger here." Hal said, throwing his hands up. "I'm here to help. Commander Tucker hasn't logged it yet, officially. He figures that with some pointers we could get a score Starfleet would like.' Hal said. "What the big brass doesn't know can't hurt 'em"

"I don't know why I can't pass them. I had no problem in the Academy." She said thinking that it was before her marriage and the separation from her husband where they had to be stationed on different vessels for the time being.

"Cool," Hal said. He wasn't gonna pry too much. He had just assumed stress or something like that. Ever helpful he spoke up. "Have you altered anything with your shooting in the meantime?"

The small woman shook her head her slightly curved ears visible for a moment. "Not in the slightest. I had two weeks vacation then came here. Nothing has changed." She assured trying to think herself but the changes in her marital status couldn't change things like that now could it?

"Ok. Maybe you could show me you're stance?" Hal said, "running through the checklist" as it were. He clearly wanted to help after all. He began to run through the "list" but eventually dropped it, opting to get to know the person. "I have an idea." he said. "Why don't we head on down to the range? We can talk on the way." he offered.

Cassie nodded and slowly rose from her couch properly and grabbed up her uniform jacket pulling it on making herself presentable. "Lead the way," She offered as she didn't know where the security section was let along a range of some sort.

He exited Cassie in tow. The pair started heading for an aux. phaser range he knew from one of his patrols. Using a "shortcut" he knew they made it there relatively quickly. Drawing phasers he passed one to Cassie.

"Alright. Ready when you are. Do your best and we'll go from there. What Tucker doesn't know can't hurt him." he chuckled. He made sure of the settings of his own phaser as he spoke.
