The one good thing about being so far out of her time and away from Starfleet was that there were no reports to fill out and no backlogs of alien languages to translate. Kendra's focus was her job while on the clock, but she did tend to have a little more free time. For now, Kendra was happy to try out some new food that she had never had the chance to try in her day. She had ordered Bajoran hasperat from the replicator with a glass of water. As she scanned the cafeteria, she noticed what looked like a small child sitting at a table near the viewport. It was the Chief of Sciences, Jinx. Walking over to the other woman, Kendra asked, "May I sit?"
Jinx looked up from the padd she was reading and brushed a lock of red hair from her green eyes. “Oh! Sure!” the tiny woman said. She was sitting on what looked like a child’s booster seat to get her up to the level of the table. “Plenty of room.”
She had seen more than a few species in her time in a starship, both civilian and as a Starfleet officer almost two centuries ago. "Thanks for the seat," Kendra replied with a smile as she sat in the open chair across the table. "You're a Kisongo, right?" Kendra asked, pretty sure that she had heard of the species at some point, but she might be confusing them with the Miran. "I think you're the first one I've met."
Jinx looked at Kendra with a bit of surprise. “You’ve heard of my species?” she asked. “Most people don’t know about us.”
With her cheeks growing a bit pink, Kendra looked down slightly as she admitted, "Well, heard of may have been a stretch. I've read your passenger papers and looked up some information in the database." Looking back to meet Jinx's eyes, Kendra added, "Though with my communications background, I would like to learn about the Kisongo."
“Oh,” Jinx said. “Well, I guess I can help with that,” she said. “What do you want to know?” She finished off a bit of meat from a large bone of some kind, which she tossed onto the floor. There was a sort of trilling sound, and the bone disappeared under the table.
Noticing the situation with the bone, Kendra fought the urge to look under the table. Taking a look at the food on her own plate, she decided that she had to know what was happening before she could take a bite. "Is there something under the table? Nothing that will eat me?" she asked, only half joking with the second question.
“Oh, that’s Zambi, my friend,” Jinx said. She paused, tilting her head a bit. “Well, Zambi would eat you, but I won’t let her,” she promised Kendra.
Jinx gave a light whistle, and the noise under the table stopped. Then a small raptor-like reptile, about the size of a cat, jumped up onto the bench. It was purple and blue in color, with short, clawed forearms and sporting a set of wicked claws on the hind legs, as well, one of which was considerably larger than the others on each foot. The raptor bared sharp teeth at Kendra and hissed.
“Be nice, Zambi,” Jinx scolded. “Give her a bit of your meat. She’ll get real friendly,” she instructed Kendra.
Tearing a piece of meat from her plate, Kendra placed it on the table in front of the creature. She did not yet trust it enough to hand feed it. "Where his Zambi's home planet?" the woman asked as she watched the animal down the piece of hasperat.
