Alexis slowly moved out of the bathroom and nearly jumped out of her skin and threw something in the general direction as she found her estranged husband just sat on the end of the bed waiting for her. She really needed to look at taking his privileges away to make it just that little bit harder for him to get into her quarters.
“What do you want Liam?” She asked softly pulling the towel just a little tighter around her. He had said all he had needed to in the Seabase before they had been attacked.
The events of the Seabase were ever present in his mind. He had seen horrible things before, taken part in them under the cloak and dagger veil of Starfleet ideals. The Seabase had brought up things in him that he thought were dealt with, squared away but spending time with Alexis again made him realise he hurt more than he realised.
He had been dead, and she had moved on. So why was he so angry about her finding the arms of other men?
He had slept with other women albeit he didn't know who he was, let alone that he was even married.
Sitting on the bed he looked at the floor. He wasn't sure how to say it so he just did. "I'm sorry for what I said down there." Liam looked at his hands, rubbing them together as he played with his wedding ring that he kept on the opposite hand.
"Why are you sorry? It is exactly how you feel after all. You have every right to feel like that." The woman said watching him play with his wedding ring. She was surprised he even wore it after what had been said on the base.
"I wish I'd never went on that operation." Something he'd never admitted before. "Years of pain, that I caused for wanting to rid the galaxy of General Zod. Well Starfleet Intel but I still said yes..." he paused for a moment noticing her seeing the ring. "I was angry on the base, at you, at myself, I don't know. You moved on..."
Alexis felt the same way. She had hated the fact he went on the assignment leaving her on Starbase 50 when he should have been coming with her to start a family and finally settle down. "I did not move on... you think me sleeping around was moving on. No one compared to you!" The woman muttered looking at him unsure. How could anyone every compare to him?
He didn't need to be a Betazoid to feel how she felt. The feelings in the room were quite palpable. Liam sighed quite audibly. Not on purpose but it how he felt. "Look at it from my perspective, it looked that way." he began trying not to start an argument. "I know it hurt you, me not being there but when I got my memory back piece by piece it was alone on a station of strangers. Memories of us came back, but so much time had passed that it felt like a dream and you being gone was my nightmare. Then I find out bits here, bits there. Some happy that you were moving on up in the fleet but then others of you with other men were like daggers to my heart."
"I did not mean to dagger you. If I had an inkling you were alive..." Alexis sighed herself and ran her hand along his arm until she could weave her fingers through his stopping his fiddling with his ring. "Do you know where I was when you woke up? Why I was not there?" She asked gently knowing he did not at all. "I was finishing your mission so you had nothing to fear." She told him. "Why else would I have bright blue hair."
"I would rather he still lived than not have you by my side darlin." Liam replied honestly. "But I understand why you weren't." It didn't make it any easier however. He awoke to find the life he had been living was a lie, he wasn't a pirate that hated the Federation/Starfleet. He was in fact a highly decorated Intelligence Officer whom has suffered a severe head injury and became the people he had tried to stop. Not only that he was married, and when he began to remember the love he had for the woman he was beside now it was almost enough to make his heart break.
"I kinda liked your blue hair, reminded me of your mother." he joked. "I'm sure she wore blue... not a lot else."
Alexis found herself giggling and laying her head against his shoulder trying to stifle the memory of her mother at there wedding in blue hair and not much else. She had been dramatic as usual especially as she had just divorced her father and was courting another man there. "She did indeed have blue hair." She confirmed enjoying the moment. "I did what I had to for your security. I could not do it at the time and Starfleet Intelligence is not fans of unfinished business but it is over. You do not need to be part of them anymore if you do not want to. We could..." The woman stopped and shrugged.
"Run away?" he joked once more. "I'm not a bad horse trainer, could steal some of my father's and start a ranch somewhere. No Starfleet, no hassle. Just you, me and the world. The way it was meant to be." he added as he placed his arm around her and held her for a moment, her head still resting on his shoulder. "Although I suspect it would be hard for both of us to leave this life behind..."
Alexis couldn't help but chuckle at what he said and smiled. "I am pretty sure if you turned up at your father's ranch and asked him for some horses he would just give them to you." Alexis pointed out gently allowing his familiarness sink into her. "I meant more what do we do now? Do we want to sort our marriage out? I know I do." Alexis said honestly sounding a little bit scared for the first time in forever.
Liam nodded. His father would probably have gave him all the horses if he thought it would help. However, the latter half of Alexis' words had his mind spinning. She was right though, he would have her back in a heartbeat and deep down he knew she knew that even if she did sound uneasy at asking the question. He squeezed her arm, "I do too. You were the best thing I ever had in life Alexis... even amnesia couldn't make me forget that."
"Well I am glad brutally beating me up was because you remembered me." The woman commented on with a small smile as he squeezed her tightly. She slowly moved and sat on his lap so she could look at him in the eyes properly. "I meant what I said, no one ever compared, I was always trying to fill the hole you left." She whispered gently. "But I kind of do need to tell you something." Alexis could not make this work if she had anything hidden between them. She needed to tell him after the other universe and why Intelligence had been so eager to fix things.
Liam repositioned himself a little as she moved onto his lap, she had always liked to be close to him and he liked that this was how she chose to do so and that she felt comfortable enough to. "I am sorry that I left you... you actually have no idea how sorry I am for that," he said with a little tear falling from his eye. "Tell me what?" he asked wiping it away.
"No more tears," Alexis said softly kissing his cheek softly where the tear had fallen to. She took a deep breath, this was going to be difficult but he needed to hear it from her and no one else. "You know we apprehended a ship that had a dimension incursion." She knew he did, he had joined at the same time as it had happened. "The other universe had a me and she had a daughter with Nathan." Alexis wanted things to be open between them. "I keep thinking about that little girl in that universe." She admitted.
The sound of Nathan made his expression change to one of discomfort and sadness, but he tried to hide that for what Alexis was telling him. "I can imagine that it is a difficult thing to know." he said trying to fathom how she felt. He knew she had wanted kids with him, and he with her. They had planned on that after his mission that led to his disappearance but fate was against it then.
"It really is." Alexis agreed seeing his expression twist and turn. He was trying to empathise with her and it made her love him even more as he tried to help. "I... I guess... I wanted you to know so that if it comes up in the future you are prepared to face it with me." It was the point of moving on together that things were in the open.
He knew of the experience she had been through, he had found out through colleagues and he was happy he had told him. Ironically in his line of work he valued honesty and when it came down to it he was always truthful when it came to her, always. "Lex, I'd face down the Borg with you." he said giving her a squeeze for comfort. "If we do this then we do it together, as we always should have done."
The woman took the squeeze as confirmation that he was not upset or angry about her conflicting feelings and that made her relieved, to say the least. Nathan had always been a sore spot for the man and it most likely would continue but there it was. "Then you better figure out some words to tell your parents and help me pack my possesions if we are doing this together thing." She whispered to him before ducking to capture his lips in a soft kiss that spoke of the feelings she was experiencing.
Liam smiled as Alexis kissed him and looked to him, "My parents will be over the moon to have you back. They still talk about you, the missing daughter saga is a tale they tell to people and remind me of. Said I was a fool to take on such a dangerous mission and almost die, then lose my memory and become a nasty pirate. Told me to think about how it made you feel and that I should tell you to come see them, stay with them. I think they love you more than me..."
"They were devasted when you were presumed dead with your ship," Alexis told him quietly. His parents were wonderful people and she had felt awful pulling away from them and everything that reminded her of Liam. It hurt too much. "I could never measure up to the you shaped hole." Slowly she stood up and walked over to where a pile of clothes were and tugged on an old thread bared shirt.
"You'd have been surprised..." he began. "They had lost a son then slowly the lost a daughter. I know they will be happy to see you when the time is right." He stood up and followed her as she tugged at the shirt. He stood behind her, embraced her, his hands around her hips and stomach. Liam began to kiss her back, the shoulder and then up her neck before whispering in her ear. "Do you really need to put that on?"
The towel has slipped to the floor as his hands stopped the shirts descent and made her look over her shoulder at him. "Yes." The woman said softly. "We need to talk more. Not everything can be fixed by sex." Alexis wanted to discuss and talk for once instead of just fixing things with sex.
Liam smirked, stood back with his hands up and put his best playboy smirk on. "It is fun though..."
"Winter...That smirk never suited you ever." The woman said with a roll of her eyes as she moved forward and started to work on his uniform jacket. "Come to bed minus a few items please." She requested softly.
He helped her take his jacket off and smiled normally at her. "I could never say no to you."
Alexis gave him a serious look than conveyed her annoyance for a moment. "You said no to Starbase 50." She reminded him in a sing-song voice as she moved to get under the covers of bed allowing him to take off what else he wanted.
Naturally Liam stripped down to his underwear, boxers were his choice in that respect, and slipped into the bed next to her. For a moment he got lost in her eyes, the blackness of them, and the beauty of her body. He had forgotten how much he missed sharing a bed with her, simply being with her.
Alexis wiggled around until she was laid next to him and looked back at him. She always enjoyed moments like this at the end of the days when they could just be them without the ranks and responsibilities. "So..." She wondered.
"So..." he replied. It was as simple as that.
