Mission: Mission 3 - Negligence
Location: Engineering
Timeline: Backpost
1045 words - 2.1 OF Standard Post Measure

Engineering was quiet this morning as Bradon prepared to leave for Bajor. The captain had been nice enough to grant the crew shore leave. After what they had been through, a little relaxation in the sun sounded like a wonderful idea to him.

He spent a few minutes reviewing the engineering logs for the last day; no matter how hard he tried, he just could not stop being the chief while he was aboard the Mary Rose.

Finally, he was done, or at least the thought he was. He had just locked up his console when an incoming message chirped. He glanced down to see who had sent it. The Captain. Hope this wasn't more bad news. They'd finally agreed on what he needed, latinum-wise, to get the ship in better shape.

No, it wasn't money. It was personnel. Seems the captain had hired on another engineer for the department. A Sebastian Rudd. He opened the slim personnel record the captain had forwarded with the message.

A few years younger than he was, and a Human/Vulcan mix. That could be interesting, depending on which side he leaned toward. Clean record, as far as his dossier stated. And a competent engineer, from what some of the reference letters stated. Good. We need more competence in the department.

Bradon looked over at the time. He still had some time, and was curious about the new crewmember. He tapped the communicator on his desk. A soft chirp responded.

=/\= Chief Engineer Gordon to Sebastian Rudd. If you have a moment, would you join me in Engineering? =/\=

Sebastian stopped at the nearest comm panel and tapped a button. =/\= Sebastian here. On my way.=/\=

He found his way without too much trouble; after the short tour with his new roommate, he had taken a longer, more thorough one on his own. Getting to know the Mary Rose in a more leisurely, more intimate fashion. Even if he were stuck doing PMs and lesser tasks for awhile until he proved himself, as was true on many ships, Sebastian had already begun working on the interesting task of getting to know his knew ship. Learning her ways and sounds. It was a challenge and Sebastian had always appreciated challenges.

The fact that he was half-Vulcan was not immediately apparent though there were signs ... such as the tips of his pointed ears peaked through his dark, tousled, shoulder-length hair when he moved just right ... or the oversized sweaters, this one charcoal gray, that he wore because he was always cold ... but mostly it was the keen intelligence that lurked within the depths of his dark gaze.

He entered Main Engineering a short while later. There was only one other person there, presumably the ship's Chief Engineer, and he made his way over. "I'm Sebastian Rudd," he said. "You're Gordon?"

Bradon looked over at hearing his name, then turned and extended his hand to the man. "That's me," he replied. "Nice to meet you. So," he said, turning fully away from the workbench that held a power regulator that he had been rebuilding, "I hear from the captain that you've joined the crew of the Mary Rose in the form of an engineer. That right?" He grabbed a towel off the bench and dry wiped his hands as he awaited an answer.

"Sure is," Sebastian answered as he shook the man's hand. "The Captain spoke about traveling to places most don't go while bringing the ship forward through technological time."

"So what sort of experience you got?"

Sebastian leaned against the edge of the workbench as she shoved his hands in his pockets. "I've always been an engineer. Grew up on a freighter and spent the past 11 years doing whatever work became available. I've served on a number of civilian vessels, participated in missions."

Bradon nodded as he listened. Hands-on experience. That was good. Oh, book learning was fine, but nothing beat real world experience.

"Look, I don't have a Starfleet background but I know as much as a Starfleet engineer. Maybe more. Because I haven't been confined to one engine room. I think you'll find that I can do what needs to be done."

Bradon nodded again. "I'm good with that, Sebastian. My I call you Sebastian?"

"Not big on formalities. Sebastian is fine ... or Bas. I assume you don't intend that I should start calling you Sir?"

Bradon snorted. "Hell no. Bradon is fine, or Chief if the mood strikes. I left all that Yes Sir, Yes Ma'am crap behind me when I left Starfleet."

He gestured over toward the main console, then headed over to it. "I don't know if you've had an opportunity to work on something this old, or this jury-rigged," he swung his arms around to the bulkheads around him. "She's been gutted, but she still has some life in her."

Sebastian chuckled. "Civilian Captains, eternally proud of whatever rusted out hulk they fly, nearly always expect miracles." He waggled his eyebrows and grinned. "And, though I've held this card back a time or two, its purely fascinating trying to restore life to the nearly departed."

Bradon tapped some controls on the console and a three-dimensional representation of The Mary Rose. He set it to a slow rotation. He spent the next several minutes going over the ship's systems for the new engineer, pointing out the systems that had shown themselves to be most troublesome. "That's about it for the main systems. 'Course there's a ton of things that either have been disconnected or are just plain not working."

Sebastian listened, a thoughtful look on his face, as his agile mind took in what his new boss was saying. "And where did you want me to start?"

Bradon considered for a moment, then looked over at the other man. "Tell you what. How about you take the next shift or two and take a look at the status of the ship. Then develop for me a plan of attack. Not down to the nitty-gritty; we'll do that when we start each task. Can you do that?"

"Sure thing." Sebastian said.
