508 words - 1 OF Standard Post Measure

Screams of terror echoed through the still sparringly furnished quarters. First one, then two voices and not much later a third voice added to the screams.

Lhaes, who had been sleeping peacefully, bolted upright in bed and even before he had completed that move he'd already shot out of bed and had gone to the girls' sleeping area at full sprint. "Lights!" he shouted, squinting as the sudden light almost blinded him. He rushed to one of the beds, taking the screaming girl in his arms.

"Shhhh," he soothed as he cradled her to him. Soon he was joined by his other daughter, who burrowed into him as well. "What is it?" He could sense their fear without much effort and it was almost overwhelming. "What has you so scared Liviana?"

The little girl shivered. "The voices," she whispered between sobs, "someone's in the room daddy..someone's here. We're hearing voices..."

Kissing her on the top of her head, Lhaes set her down and started to walk around the room. Peering under beds, in closets, other storage spaces. All in the full ilumination of the lights. "THere's nothing here..." He eased Liviana back down and tucked her in, then moved to put Evaste back into her own bed. Finally he made sure Galan was safe and calmed down as well. "You must have been dreaming," he suggested calmly though he felt a shiver travel down his spine.

Turning off the lights, he walked back to his own bed. He felt the hairs on the back of his neck turn up just as he was about to crawl back under the covers. "Don't let it out...." It was drawn out like a ghostly howl and it gave him goosebumps. Hadn't he just checked?

"Who's there!" he called out into the darkness. He sensed nothing, the children were sleeping again. There was, really, no-one here. He focused, letting his senses wander, knowing what it'd do to him, but he found nothing. Yet the wailing whisper continued. "Show yourself!" he demanded, starting to feel dizzy.

He reached out further. Perhaps someone was trying to play a trick on him; it wouldn't be the first time he was targeted for pranks, and he doubted it'd be the last. Blackness danced at the edge of his vision as he let his senses wander further. It was sapping him dry, draining his energy. He knew the consequences, but with the children's sanity on the line, he couldn't take any chances. Barring other sleeping souls, and those on night shift, he sensed nothing. No pranksters, nothing.

Don't let it escape, don't let it out...

With the thought of what shouldn't be let out at the back of his mind, the Romulan passed out and fell back onto his bed, half covered by the blankets he'd been in the process of pulling back over himself. He was exhausted, and utterly drained. His last thought was to have himself checked out in the morning, and then...nothing.
