Shelter

Mission: Mission 15: Adrift
Location: Deck 6 - Converted Cargo Bays
Timeline: 21:30
491 words - 1 OF Standard Post Measure

Jake looked out over the couple of dozen people in front of him. The cargo bay was reasonable in size, but it was still a working cargo bay, and that meant less space for everyone to effectively live in - which is what they would be doing for the next few days.

"Everyone!" he barked, getting their attention. Satisfied that enough eyes were on him, he began.

"From what we know, there has been a massive systems failure in the automation core that has knocked out a dozen systems. We're virtually dead in the water, with no sensors, communications, and barely any ability to navigate." He let that information sink in. "As if that couldn't get any worse, right now we're directly in the path of an ion storm that's drifting through the system. A storm that by itself shouldn't be dangerous, but in our current state could mean a bit of a rough ride.

"I know a lot of you are worried or scared. Trust me, that's normal. But we're working on fixing the problem and getting out of this mess. Burnie and the engineering team have a plan to help us weather the storm and find what we need to make emergency repairs. However, that's going to take several days.

"For now, all of this means that we're without main or even backup power on most decks. Deck six, where we all are now, is one of the most shielded spaces on the ship. It has its own water storage and is where we have some food stocks. To reassure everyone: we're safe here. Even though life support might not be at full capacity, we've most of what we need to last the week. Nollel will be in charge of our logistics - making sure we ration food and water properly. Curtis and Kalahaeia are working on getting us some limited steering ability. The engineering crew are figuring out how to keep the ship intact. The rest of us need to support them however we can, whether that's keeping spirits up or pitching in with other things that need doing. I want everyone to check in with the medical team regularly: we don't want anyone trying to be a hero if they're hurt or injured."

He paused, noting the silence around him.

"Rosie is more than just our ship, she's our home. The Captain might not be here, but we are, and we're going to take care of her. This crew - this family - can get through the next few days if we stick together."

He hoped it was enough to keep morale up. Being stuck to a small space wasn't something a lot of them were used to, even if Rosie wasn't exactly a ship of the line these days. But he meant what he said: Rosie was a home to them all. And it would be even after this was over.

"Let's get to it, people."
