Quang waited for the engineer to finish speaking with Michael. When she finished he approached.
"Hello," he said. "I haven't seen you that much. I'm Quang Van Tran. I'm the quartermaster on the Mary Rose, and help out when I can in other areas. It's nice to meet you."
Grinning at the approaching man, Draia said, "Pleased to meetcha," and she flailed herself at him with open arms. It quickly became evident she was wrapping him up in a quick hug. Draia stepped back from smooshing their bodies together, but kept close enough to leave an arm draped over his shoulder. "Now, Quang, (I can call you Quang, right?) when you say you help out in other areas, how much mechanical repair experience would you say you have?"
Tran shrugged cheerfully and hugged her back quickly and let her go. It was nice and unexpected that she had done that. You learned a lot in the restaurant and hospitality business. Openness was a surprise.
"Sure you can call me Quang, not a problem," he answered in a friendly manner. "You can ask Bradon about that. I helped with what he set up, along with the others. He'd be better judge of my mechanical aptitude. But I'm happy to help when needed."
Draia flapped a hand at Quang in a dismissive gesture, saying, "Oh, who am I kidding? I can work with any aptitude level. Willingness level. That is the real test. If you promise it would make you happy, I'm sure I have an engineering project or seven that could use another pair of hands. ...When you're not doing favours for me, what's your favourite thing to do aboard the Rosie?"
Quang shrugged casually as he replied, "Several things. Reading, 20th century French art. Although, I have to admit, I'd like to set up a bar and restaurant on the Mary Rose." Anticipating the possible reaction, he continued. "It's a long term goal. I'll need to clear it with Reuben of course," he finished with a smile. "But I like it. I'm thinking of calling it "The Yellow Flag". What do you think?"
Staring blankly back at Quang, Draia replied blandly, "I don't understand." She opened her mouth and she scrunched up her eyes, as she started to parse out the imagery, but then she shrugged and she shook her head in defeat. "What does a yellow flag mean?"
"Sorry," explained Quang dryly with a smile. "Old earth navigation flag. It means the ship is healthy. Welcome aboard. I liked the symbolism of it. And it reminded me a little of home. Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. It's in what we call southeast asia."
Her voice going high with uncertainty, and only half of her usual bluntness," Draia replied, "I don't know, y'know? The Yellow Flag... It doesn't sound especially edible to me...?
