"Wait till I tell Kendra," Offerman chuckled under his breath as he came into the mess hall. He grinned as he looked at the spread for his midday meal choices, "oooh tenderloin steak!" He started to serve himself a nice, still sizzling piece of the meat when he glanced over at another option, "jumbo shrimp too!"
"Anything good?" Kendra asked aloud as she stood on her toes in order to get a look at the mess hall's offerings. As the choices became clear, a look of delight crossed her face as she said, "Oooh, surf and turf. Thanks to the chef."
Jasper chuckled and gave the woman a broad grin, "I can't believe our luck with today's menu." His eyed danced as he motioned with a head bob towards the tables, "want to sit together, "I found something on the ship's computer you might find interesting."
"Sure," Kendra replied as she quickly made her plate. She followed the man over to the indicated table then laid out her spread. "Not to get straight to business, but you said the computer had something I'd want to see?" she asked with a smile.
"Do you remember Ensign Zaf Dinawa, you know the tall lanky Bolian from Security?" Jasper grinned as he walked towards an empty table, "some of his information is still on the LCARS system." Turning as he reached the table he added, "and he mentions you."
"I do," Kendra nodded. In real time, it had been a very long time since she had seen the Bolian but for the Ishimura crew it seemed like a much more recent event. Looking a little confused as she had never remembered them being very close outside of the work environment, she asked, "About me? What did he say?"
"Perhaps you should come to Ops and I can pull up the files, " Jasper said with a chuckle, "he had a real crush on you."
A slight look of surprise crossed Kendra's face and her cheeks flushed slightly, "Really?" Bringing herself out of it, she added in an almost regretful tone, "Ummm.. I never noticed."
"I found a poem he wrote for you," Jasper said, "I think he lost the courage to actually give it to you." He took in a deep breath, "I'm just surprised there is anything left on the systems regarding any of us."
"As many times as this ship has been swept through and had its memory banks wiped, I'm surprised anything made," Kendra replied, still mystified that they made it through. Realizing what it meant that Jasper had found something, she gave him a look and asked, "Did you read it?"
Jasper shook his head negatively, "I, I just couldn't, it felt rather, weird."
Trying to see if the man in front of her was carrying a PADD, Kendra asked, “Do you have the poem?” She really was not sure why she wanted to see it. Almost two centuries later, it really did not matter. Yet, she still wanted to read it.
Jasper nodded and retrieved a small PaDD from his utility belt, "it's on here, the only think on it actually."
Placing the device on the table he drew in a deep breath, "There are files from a number of us, not many but some and how they have managed to escape being deleted this long is rather amazing."
"Personal logs and notes are some of the first things in the databanks that ships delete," Kendra replied as she ran her fingers along the PADD. Still a bit in shock over the findings, she stared into the blank screen, "Thank you for this. I never thought that I would have any connection to my... our time again."
"Neither did I," said Jasper but he's not the only one with files left on the system, the Captain has a few as well." He took in a deep breath and shook his head, "it's almost as if they were left there on purpose." Absently he cut away at his steak and then looked back up, "you don't think they were left there on purpose do you?"
Bringing her out of her shock, Kendra stared at Jasper for a moment. "They thought we were dead," she pointed out. "If it was on purpose, I don't know what the previous owners would get from our personal documents," she added. But, what did that mean? Did someone know they were alive and trapped in the transporter?
Jasper shook his head, "I don't know, it is just so, bizarre to find anything like this on a ship that has been refitted, repurposed and decommissioned."
The pancakes on his plate were getting cold though he didn't seem to notice, "I better get to work before I'm the one deleted."
""It's all bizarre," Kendra echoed. With the new ship being found and various preparations being made, the crew had their work cut out for them. Her eyes fell down to the PADD again, "I've got some logs to scour through on the new ship. Don't want my job to get deleted."
"Nor mine," Jasper chuckled as he picked up his tray, "you can get the PaDD back to me sometime, no hurry." "See you around."
"I'll copy it tonight, I'll return it soon," Kendra replied. "See you later," Kendra smiled as she returned her half-finished tray to the replicator's disintegration unit.
