“Incoming communication from Starfleet command,” the computer informed him. Jon looked at his terminal. It wasn’t giving a location out. This was a command frequency. He didn’t know what to expect.

“Open communication. Reynolds,” he said as the screen revealed Ledeya.

The woman stood there in what looked like her dark quarters. She did not look like her usual grace or organised state at all. “Apologises Jonathan but there is a little bit of incident on Starbase 621.” She said without much of a greeting. She had to inform all ships in her Task Group as quickly as possible to allow them to sweep and check.

“Captain,” Jon said taking in the state of her. Something was definitely happening. “What’s happening? Can the Andromeda assist in any way?” He asked. He doubted they were close enough to be of any use but he needed to offer assistance.

She knew the man would know just by the sight of her something major had happened. He was too observant for his own good. “By all reports, there has been several explosions on 621 at the conference. Bennet is dead. I’m raising the threat level in the Task Group and advising that all ships check manifests and run a compartment by compartment sweep for anything unusual.” She shook her head at the offer of assistance. “You are too far away and I am a day away at maximum warp but the Cosmos is heading there now.”

Jon nodded. He was desperately trying to recall if he knew who Bennett was. It eluded him but anyone dead was not good news. “I’ll get that organised ASAP. Do we know who’s blowing up the conference?” He asked. He wasn’t even sure what this conference was on. “And any motives?”

“We do not but there are many possible suspects.” She admitted thinking of all the attendees. This was going to be a diplomatic nightmare like no other the Betazoid had ever faced since leaving Medical for Command. “And so many motives.” Ledeya was in no doubt that it would eventually come out but at the moment everyone was just to bust blaming each other.

Jon nodded. “Want to talk them through with someone impartial? Perhaps I could help?”

“No, you are okay Commander. It is not my investigation, it is 621's investigation and possibly Starfleet Security but certainly not mine.” Which Ledeya was thankful for, she would assist but she did not want to be in charge of that mess at all.

Jon nodded again. “Let’s hope some answers turn up soon ma’am.” He wasn’t sure what else to say and he couldn’t help. That irked him. He wondered if she wanted to speak about anything else.

The silence stretched for a long few moments before Ledeya yawned and realised something. “Ah yes… I was going to contact you today and arrange to give you something in person at your next Starbase but this emergency has interfered with that plan Captain.” Ledeya said saying the Betazoid word for Captain to make sure he got it.

A slow smile worked its way across Jons face as the penny dropped. “Really? I wasn’t expecting…. wow thank you Maam.”

“It is well deserved. You have kept yourself mostly out of trouble.” Ledeya said offering a small tease to him. It would normally be a lot more of a formal process but she was too far out and on an emergency mission. Nothing could happen until that emergency was over and Cosmos was back on routine patrol or better on a mission to one of the new colonies.

“I've been too far away to cause trouble perhaps,” Jon said with a teasing smile of his own.

“Perhaps but it is justly given.” The woman only had a hint of a smile on her face. She was tired and did not want to really be doing it over subspace but needs must.

Jon didn’t need to be an empath to know she was flagging. He had probably taken up enough of her time anyway so he tried to steer there chat to a natural like ending. She hadn’t stated she needed to speak about anything further.

“Well thank you again, Ma'am. I hope things calm down quickly at 621 and our next conversation will be on nicer events there.”
