Walking Into A Storm

Mission: Cosmos
Location: USS Cosmos, Above New Rixx
Timeline: 2396
767 words - 1.5 OF Standard Post Measure

How many times has this type of away mission happened? Alexis thought to herself as the group stood on the transport pad waiting for everyone to arrive. She was patient but her mind wanted to wander and think the longer that they stood there. She did not want to go down to the planet if she was honest, it would be a slice of home that she had neglected for a long time ashamed of her behaviour and how she had refused to speak to anyone after losing Liam the first time and then the divorce when he returned. It was too awkward to explain, her dead husband had returned and divorced her for her behaviour in coping with his death. She brought herself back and looked around.

She could hear the young petty officer and science chief talking away together about the planet and how amazing it was. All she could understand so far was that although most of the water on this planet was fresh, the water plants that had developed were more closely related to corals than to plants roughly resemble what the oceans of Earth had, but were only seen in freshwater on very rare occasions. They were both wondering if they could go diving to see them as it made the species on this planet all the more intriguing. Alexis wished she could get that excited over something as she glumly stood there. “What are the trees like?” She wondered trying to make conversation as they waited for the rest of the team.

"Blue," Christopher replied from nearby. "At least that's what the latest report said; Unusual colour for flora and fauna." Between making final checks of his kit he looked at her, wondering if she'd wanted that sort of answer or if she was indeed just breaking up the silence.

“Blue. Huh interesting,” Was all Alexis murmured as she tried to imagine a world with blue flora and fauna. It would certainly be more unique than anything she had seen before and she had been some weird and wonderful places in her 13 years in Starfleet. She glanced down as she noticed him watching her and offered an almost shy smile before turning to the Chief Engineer walking through the door with the rest of the crew. There was so much excitement in the sir it was hard to not get caught up in it.

“Everyone here Commander?” Vriaral asked deferring to the Executive Officer. He might be in charge of the fixing of the weather control system but that was it the man was there to liaise and organise.

"Looks to be," Christopher nodded, taking in the landing party.

“Sorry to interrupt Commander but New Rixx is reporting storms and requested I send you down in smaller groups.” The Transporter Chief piped up. It was a usual request but it was always unnerving with that many people.

"Has no one seen the ancient Earth horror movies? You're not supposed to split up." Karis was mostly joking but didn't know if the others would figure that out. She didn't let a lot of people see her true self.

Alexis frowned. She hated transporting down when requests like that happened. She was really just not sure why they were not taking shuttles at all but who was she to judge. She needed to start just going with the flow and not getting worked up over things. “I have not seen those movies for a long time.” She mused. She was trying to soften her image with the rest of the senior team after Liam had left in a whirlwind. It was by mutual agreement despite trying to fix the marriage but she knew it did not look at all like that.

Christopher sighed. "All right. Send me down first," he ordered. If anyone was going to be going in first it was his responsibility.

Alexis frowned and followed the man with a second thought. If he was going to be going first she was going to have to go with him, she trusted the chief engineer enough from the ships he had worked on to be able to hold his own if anything unknown happened. “Looks like it is me and you commander into the pattern buffer.” It was a good split if they just needed to focus the pattern more but Alexis would have liked one more person to thin it more but that was her security focus mind twisting and turning through situations. "Enginergize Chief." Alexis requested shouldering her bag tighter as the familiar room disappeared in front of her eyes.
