Selina Fenruse stood inside of the Interrogation suite just staring at the list of people that were required to be interrogated. It was going to be a long day with the senior officers and other officers busy so it would be all too easy for people to try things. But it was not going to happen on her watch. She liked the status quo that she had.
The white dress she wore covered just one of her shoulders, leaving the other uncovered and flowed down into a stylish square neckline. Which not only helps accentuate her gorgeous skin, it also keeps the focus on other parts of the dress. It was a relaxed fit which made the dress both enjoyable to wear and look at which would distract anyone who was interested. Why the Captain chose the outfits that the Betazoids wore after all he wanted his crew distracted and unbalanced.
Selina turned to look up as the door opened and offered a nod to the man. “Big day for you meeting the Empress.” She said trying to make conversation with the man instead of just glaring at him. She was not Alexis after all, she had not left part of herself behind as she watched the Betazed burn whilst she stood on it, the blonde had decorum and knew how to manage people.
"It was an unanticipated honor," Layil replied in his clear monotone. He wore a simple black jumpsuit version of the Fenris uniform, a lightweight alloy spear strapped to his back, knife at his boot and a disruptor pistol holstered neatly at his right side. Unfortunately, Layil was a terrible conversationalist, and he did not prompt her further, instead selecting a PADD from the shelf in front of one of the detention cells to peruse the list of names assigned to him.
Of all the interrogators aboard, Layil was perhaps the strangest. Without rank, lacking telepathic abilities, it seemed inefficient-until one saw him in action. The frighteningly empty manner in which he treated others, the coldness, the uncompromising cruelty-those things couldn't be taught. You either had them or you didn't. Whether or not he really had them was, of course, up for debate. But one couldn't argue with results.
“Very unanticipated.” Selina giggled just a little as she watched him. He was one of the few men or women onboard that she did not have to create a game with it was a simple pleasure that she enjoyed. “What have you been up to to create that honour?” She asked simply as she watched him select one of the PADDs she had left for him or Agrax.
Layil didn't seem to understand the question, and his gaze rose to hers, features empty as he attempted to parse it. "I have been performing my duties as expected," was the answer that he settled on, because it also had the benefit of being the truth. The file in his hand turned out to be for an individual known only as Fade, a Betazoid by the looks of him, dressed in white scrubs that revealed various scars across most of his visible skin. When Layil's eyes landed on him, he jumped off the bed and smacked his hands into the force-field, delivering a shock to himself that sent him flying backwards, spitting and growling. Layil didn't react.
Selina frowned at the man having picked that one. It was going to be her afternoon fun. She did not often get to play with Betazoid rebels anymore. “I will assist as they are your predecessor and you are not allowed to kill him.” Selina said gently. She only needed to prod him into it but it took a lot less effort to just suggest it.
"Yes, ma'am," Layil bowed his head acquiescently, without a trace of dissent on his face. He allowed her to key the panel off and to enter the room first. When Fade tried to stand, Layil knocked him back with an inhuman blow to the chest from his elbow, taking the air out of his lungs. He gasped and clutched at his throat, but Layil didn't respond to it. "You were found to be unsatisfactory in your interrogations toward sympathizers of the Betazoid resistance," Layil listed the charges in a rote monotone.
"You were found to be-" Fade repeated in a mocking tone. "Get bent. I'm not telling you a fucking thing."
Selina had been the silent shadow in the corner watching the violence playing out. She smirked just a little as she watched the man trying to mock and act not scared. How could someone in his position be do damn foolish to get caught? “You might not tell him but you will tell me… or more precisely show me.” Selina said simply.
"Unlikely," Fade spat, arms crossed. His PFT scores were formidable, and he had the kind of mind suited for structured resistance. It wouldn't be easy to break him, and his profile indicated he might end up dead before they got through.
Layil seemed to recognize that Selina was interested in taking over, so he maneuvered himself more to the side to give her full access. "Do you deny the charges." It was a question probably.
"Obviously yes I deny the charges." Fade rolled his eyes.
Selina just stood there smirking at the man as she started the slow process of testing his mind. "Do you know who I am?" Selina wondered as she snorted at the concept that he was innocent. She had seen the proof, she had interviewed the people after him and found a very different story to what he had reported.
His mind was sharp, like a thousand kaleidoscopic razors shifting against her. "Selina Fenruse," he recited her name. They'd worked together before.
"Then you know that no one beats me." Selina was not a stranger to pain. "I might not be able to kill you but I can lobotomize you and send you to the breeding camps for stock." She said simply. "But not before I can make you wish you were dead. If you have nothing to hide your mind would not be curling in on yourself so I will just take that as your guilt." She said simply looking at Layil.
"Great, you do what you want to do," Fade wondered if it was possible to cringe so hard you turned inside out. "There was never a point at which this was anything other than theater, so if you would kindly lobotomize me so that I don't have to listen to your prattling on, I'd be eternally grateful." Maybe he could provoke her into killing him quick, lol.
Layil watched the interaction, having never encountered this degree of vitriol from a prisoner before. Some of them thrashed and screamed, but very few blatantly spat in their face the way this individual did. It was interesting, but ultimately Layil didn't have a reaction toward it other than to pick up a toolkit near the door. "Do you wish for me to induce pain in the detainee." This directed at Selina.
Selina narrowed her eyes as she caught the stray thought about them killing him. She shook her head and indicated for Layil to go for it. There was no reason he could not have his fun if he wanted it. "Just remember he cannot die. Even I cannot kill him." She reminded Fade. "It is a shame you took this route instead of listening to others around you," Selina said sadly for a moment wishing she did not have to do what she was doing, but it needed to for the greater good. He was a fool for not playing the long game and diving in to quickly.
To classify Layil as having fun would be a fundamental misunderstanding of his state of being, but he acknowledged her words with a nod and selected a cardiac monitor from the kit, along with some straps, a jug and a hand towel. Rolling out a wheeled cot, Layil easily pinned Fade to it and restrained him. He tried to put up a fight but against Layil it was meaningless.
"It's not, actually," Fade replied, eyes snapped up to meet Selina's. "When you act sane in an insane world, people call you crazy. Torturing me isn't going to change the outcome. This place is dying, and either you can adapt, or die with it."
Layil began. In very short order Fade stopped being able to speak, other than to thrash mindlessly. When Layil let him up, he gasped like a beached goldfish, all color drained out of his face. "You already have the answers," he croaked. "You know what I did. Just get on with it!" he yelled loudly.
“I adapted the second I saw our planet burning. You did not. You thought you could play against the system for your greater good. It does not work like that.” Selina said disgusted by him. It was not often that she got annoyed but the man was annoying and stupid. “You know we cannot kill you but I wonder one day if you will wish we did. You can take him to an agoniser for transport now Layil.” She said simply crossing her legs as she stared at the captive.
"It doesn't work like that if you're a coward," he spat back, undaunted. He fought the shit out of Layil, but was quickly neutralized by a palm strike to the temple and he fell in an unconscious heap on the cot. Picking him up in a fireman's carry, Layil moved him out of the cell and into one of the mobile agonizer units that doubled as transport cages. Bye, Fade!
Selina shook her head as she watched the men leave the room. She slumped back in a chair and sighed. She now had a big problem with her plans onboard and needed a moment to think through her options.
