Rueben stayed quiet as he let the women discuss the items that were in the shop. He turned and set himself by the door watching the shadows play across the promenade as the emergency lights finally came on illuminating the place a little more. He turned off the light on the rifle but left the scope on just in case.
"Can everyone see better now?" He called back blinking away the globes that were running across his eyes.
A chorus of female voices spoke up to confirm that they were able to see in the down blinding lights.
"Yes" returned the cait as she looked around for her eyes to adjust to the new lighting.
'Wow," she stated seeing all sorts of books and scrolls written in a language of the world of Bajor, except the one she picked up which was written in a language she didn't know.
"Ummm" she turned about and flip through the pages "If I'm going to bet money on this, this book is written in an unknown language. Interesting leather..." she paused looked at the book and dropped it on the floor "...oh my god! the leather is made out of a person's face"
Rueben turned frowning at the Caitian and looked at the book now staring at them from the floor. He should have been disturbed but his life had become too strange to find a book bound in skin.
That was the moment Alika decided to turn the corner back into the Central Core, eyes moving from the text she had found and down to the floor, where the Skin-Book lay. "... That's gross. I also found the last shipment of goods that were logged. Turns out it was somewhere between the first cult rising and probably whenever they started flaying people for book covers."
"Surely that would have had to been when the cult was here?" Dixoho didn't think the Cardassians would be involved in anything like that. It wasn't their style or anything. She shivered and moved off to investigate her own thing like gathering abandoned maps and charts, not items that were useless and downright creepy.
"That doesn't mean it's accurate," Alika pointed out. "The shipment's not even for stuff I know a whole lot about. Or want to know a whole lot about. Anyone here know Cardassian-cult-language?"
"I'm out. Give me a star map any day of the week." Dixoho said shivering at the thoughts of the cult. She had seen some strange things in deep space but the thought of a cult that worshipped bad wormhole aliens just unnerved her.
How long do you have before you need it? The small voice of Reessem Nubohn came over the communications. She knew some Cardassian and the language couldn't have deviated too far from it.
Alika frowned at the manifest in front of her. "However long it takes, it's not like we're in the biggest hurry. I'll bring it to you when we're done here."
Brilliant. You bring me back the best presents Alika The youngest crew member said without a hint of irony or sarcasm. She had sulked at first but now she thought about it she didn't want to be stumbling around in the dark especially somewhere last time anyone had ventured had died.
"I am moving towards the Command Center and Bridge," Rueben informed the group of girls. He wanted to catch up with the last group that had been heading straight to the Bridge. "Anyone else want to come or are you ladies happy here shopping?"
"I"m good," Aurora said. "I have a few locations I want to scout. See what I can find that's interesting."
The Captain nodded. She was the only one apart from Alika that he could trust to go off by themselves but it didn't mean he liked it, Empok Nor gave him the creeps, to say the least. There was a darkness that surrounded everything even though there was now a light on.
"Stay safe and keep your communications open to Rosie," Rueben warned sternly. He didn't have time for heroics or trouble. This was a go in, get items, get out quickly mission and he didn't want it going wrong.
"Always," Aurora said, her voice dropping to a sincere note. She moved off down the corridor and away from the group, the sound of her voice, humming an old Deltan folksong echoed in the long-vacant spaces.
Alika popped her head down the corridor, watching Aurora closely for a short moment. They were supposed to explore, but she didn't want anyone disappearing into a cultist trap, either. "We should stay in the core too. Who knows what's past this place."
"Yes Ma'am," Dixoho said with a grin as she moved further into the shop having a conversation with Reessem as she did talking about the cultist and the Cardassians who had inhabited the station once upon a time. It was amazing to think that just across the sector that there was another Station the same as this one that was fully occupied and full of life. It was such a strange thought to know as she carried on moving through the station to find things to scalvage.
