Johnathen stepped closer, his face a mask of barely controlled anger. "Oh, it's not?! So then...you weren't just making out with the woman I love?!" The young pilot stepped right up to the Romulan. There was zero fear in his eyes as he glared.
"Kissing her yes," the Romulan admitted calmly, not wanting to escalate the situation, "making out no. I would never touch another's woman." He wondered how to best explain this without making her look bad. "She came here asking for my help."
Cassie looked at Johnathen as he appeared and shook her head. Why had he followed and come in right at that moment? "I came to ask for his help. We are nearly the same species." She said as Reuben came into sickbay and stopped dead at the scene that greeted him.
Turning to face Cassie, Johnathen surprised everyone, by saying, in fluent Vulcan, albeit with a Terran accent, "Ka'see, you and I are more alike than you and him. Remember, you are half human. " He reached up and took hold of both sides of her face as he stared intently and forcefully into her eyes, the hunger he held for her was as apparent as the points on her ears. "We may not be bonded by marriage, but our hearts and souls are as one. When you hurt, I hurt, when I am happy, you are happy. I am now, and will forever be yours. I am your champion and you are my heart!"
The woman froze as he took hold of her face and made her look at him. "I might be human but I still hurt Tevir and he is fully Vulcan." His grip had eased on her face, but he had lost none of his ardour even as she threw her Husband in his face.
"What is going on?" The Captain demanded wondering if he had stepped into something bigger than he had thought he was coming to get Lheas advice for Johnathen.
"This is a private affair captain," Lhaes suggested calmly, not moving away from Cassie even though he knew he should. Yet he didn't interfere either. "You hurt him yes, but from your medical records you were hurt too," he said softly, "I am not Vulcan, but I know what you are going through. I have gone through it, six years ago. You need him." Lhaes pointed squarely at Jonathen, just not touching his chest with his index finger.
"Nothing is overly private on this ship. It is worse than a Starfleet vessel." Rumours and hearsay moved faster than any other ship he had been on and he (Rueben) had been a lot of the rumours on The Victory. He needed to separate this trio and get more help. The Captain looked at the woman and frowned moving towards her. Within seconds before anyone could react he had hauled the woman over his shoulder despite her protests and was leaving the room.
"Aren't you going to go after her?" the Romulan challenged, clearly amused -and somewhat astonished- by the captain's impromptu action. He gave the Human pilot a firm nudge. "Go," he all but ordered.
The Captain had moved so quickly, that Johnathen was briefly stuck in place, speechless. Then, with the Doctor's nudging, the Human sped off after the woman he loved. "Captain! Wait! What are you doing?!"
Reuben said nothing even as Cassie hit him on the back with a little more force that he thought was possible from her. He strode into the Security Complex to the first cell. He deactivated the force field and deposited her quite nicely on the bed despite the Vulcan phrases coming out of her mouth and put the force field back up.
Lhaes grabbed a medkit on the way out, racing after them. When they reached the brig, he cast the captain a very genuine glare. "Just what do you think you're doing captain," he demanded, taking out his tricorder. "Let me in there. This woman needs help, not locking up."
Johnathen interjected. "Captain! If anyone is to go inside with her, I beg you to allow me to do so. Can't you see that she's in pain?" He pleaded with his captain. "I know I can calm her. Please, allow me to try!"
Reuben frowned as he looked at the pair like they were mad, he just wanted a shoreleave without any bother. “Lhaes go in there and make sure she isn’t in pain and sedate her. I need to talk to the Vulcans on the planet. You should have told me Johnathen.” It now explained why he was being so shifty when they had been drinking about why Cassie was being so off with him.
Nodding, Lhaes stepped through the opening, flinching ever so slightly as the forcefield came back on. He knelt before the woman, only briefly diverting his eyes to load up a hypospray. "It will be alright Cassie, I promise. I'm going to give you a sedative now. Rueben says there are Vulcans on Azzia, he's going to talk to them but until then you need to stay here. You're safe here, no-one will hurt you. Do you understand?"
Johnathen watched, helplessly, as the Doctor was allowed entrance into Cassie's cell. He felt a pang of jealousy that the Romulan was so near his love. Looking at Reuben, he responded to the man's statement. "It wasn't my place to tell you, or anyone else. Yes, we've been in stasis for nearly a century and a half, however, I've loved and honored that woman since before your grandparents were born. My loyalty will always go to her, first and foremost." He suddenly stood straighter, as if he had found a well of courage. "If that is a problem for you, I'm sorry. Nothing will change how I feel about her. And no one will keep us apart." There was a newfound steel in the pilot's eyes. He clearly meant every word that he said.
"We will discuss this when she is better." Reuben looked away annoyed just in time to see the woman grab Lheas in a gesture that was familiar. A mind meld. The man rushed forward quickly and wretched the man away from the woman and grabbed the hypospray.
Lhaes screamed at the touch and subsequent sudden invasion into his mind, rolling with his fall as he was suddenly grabbed and tossed aside. He panted for breath, trying to shake off the unwanted feeling. "What..." he started as he rubbed his temples. This wasn't something he had been prepared for.
Johnathen rushed in as well. Kneeling next to the Doctor, he gently helped the man to his feet. "She tried to force a mind meld on you. It's one of the dangers of her current condition." He turned and glared at Reuben. "That was why I told you to put me in here. She cares enough for me, that she wouldn't have lashed out. I could have calmed her some." He then turned away and helped Lhaes out of the cell, guiding him over to one of the empty chairs by the guard desk.
The Captain frowned as the woman went limp in his arms and he gently laid her on the bed. "She wasn't lashing out." Reuben held his now aching head, Vulcans normally caused him to have one. "She is trying to mate... Johnathen, don't have illusions about this situation or her at the moment... She isn't Cassie." It was hard to explain to the man as he came back out. The woman had rights to refuse to mate with someone and she had obviously said no to Johnathen despite his views on the matter.
The young pilot nodded. "I know she's not exactly rational at the moment, Captain. I think, between our prolonged imprisonment, and now this place, which is a flux of various time anomalies, has caused her to enter this part of her life much harder than it normally would have been." He stepped over to the transparisteel wall that seperated Cassie from them, looking longingly at her unconcious face. "We talked a lot about it. She was starting to teach me what I needed to do, when we were attacked by that damn cloud creature." He looked back at Reuben, his eyes wet with tsadness. "I apologize for me earlier disrespectful tone, Sir. You are our Captain. I allowed my emotions to get the better of me. I'm sorry." He paused briefly, and then asked, "What is your plan?"
"I am calling Vulcans in on this." The Captain said ending the discussion on it. No one on the ship was capable of helping the woman so all delicacy and trying to keep it behind a closed door was out of the window.
Johnathen nodded. Reuben was right, of course. Only the Vulcans would truely understand how to help the woman he loved. "May I stay here, with her? You have my word that I will not enter her cell without your permission. I just want to be near her, show her a familiar face, to try and keep her calm."
"I see no harm in that," Lhaes spoke up. He was still rubbing his temples, trying to shake the feeling of violation. He had said no, he had refused to help her because he knew there was someone who was ready to help. "Yes call in the Vulcans but in the end she must mate, or die. We should not wait too long."
The Romulan turned his head towards Jonathan. "Talk to her, convince her that you understand what you are in for. You will get hurt but medical will stand by to assist you. I have been in your place. My daughters are the result of such a mating."
Johnathen looked from Reuben to Lhaes. "I know, Doc. I understand that I risk being injured. However, I would gladly take any injury, if it brought her peace. She always told me that these times would be the most difficult in our relationship. I am prepared."
"I have no doubt you are an honourable man," Lhaes told the pilot, "but the choice is hers. I think in the end, she will choose you or will have no other alternative but you. We can try to make certain of that. You have my word that I will not be the one to mate with her. I already said no before she did this." The Romulan paused. "I would suggest you both," he indicated both men, "speak with the Vulcans and get their insight."
The Captain nodded and looked at the young man between them both. “Will you come back down to the planet and the scientist compound?” He was sure Lheas would watch Cassie or they could find a Security crewman to watch her. She wasn’t getting out without his voice recognition so it wasn’t a worry who was watching her.
Johnathen couldn't believe what he was hearing. The Captain wanted him to leave Cassie's side! Did he not listen to anything that either he or the Doctor had said? He was about to protest when he finally realized that Reuben didn't really care about his issue. All he wanted was peace on his ship. Deciding that it would be better for him to just go with it, Johnathen finally acquiesced. "I'll do whatever you command, Captain." Taking one final long look at Cassie's unconscious form, the young pilot left the brig, heavy-hearted and defeated.
