Mission:
Mission 8 - Shattered
917 words - 1.8 OF Standard Post Measure
Slade shoved a sweatshirt in to her bag and rolled her eyes again. “Mom it’s not that I have something against the family, why do you assume that?” she demanded.
A blue eyed, blond woman glared on the screen, “Because, Uncle Rich and I have spent years making a network, you literally have over 160 ships you could get a job on, and I know of at least 4 looking for medical staff.” Bl Slade Hemlorac grumbled, “I just don’t understand why you would even apply for a job outside the network! You think we did all this work for our kids not to take advantage of it?” she demanded.
Slade rolled her eyes, “You’ve been around Aunt Hedva too much, you’re starting to sound like her.” she sighed. She hadn’t seen her Aunt in several years, and she was the quintential Jewish mother hen, guilt trips and all.
Bly made a face, “Yeah well her tactics work sometimes.” she said. “Rosie…” she started.
“Slade.” she corrected her mother.
The blond struggled not to have an arrogant smirk at that, “Why did you choose my maiden name?” she asked.
“Because I hate my given name, and I don’t want to be known as a Noble mans daughter, it was hard enough at school among telepaths who knew a member of the Hemlorac family when they saw one. Besides, I think Slade makes me sound like a badass.” she said squaring her shoulders and tossing her own blonde hair over her shoulder.
Bly chuckled, “Why did you have to take after me? I thought about not taking your fathers name for a while, i worked so hard to be my own person, I didn’t want to give it up.” she commented. “Besides that whole Nobleman thing irritated me as well, at least until I figured out how to antagonize the other nobles, and started to make them uncomfortable.”
“And you wonder why none of us can make Alcaren friends.” Slade said dryly. THe Alcaren people, especially the noble class were not fond of humans, feeling them too brash, immature, and even deviant. Her mother basically proved them right, and would think about things just to make the prudest of them all uncomfortable if they accidentally heard her thoughts when in proximity.
BLy waved her hand, “Yeah well, who wants to deal with those stuff shirts who can’t see past their own noses?” she shrugged.
Slade rolled her eyes, “I’m not a fan of most of them either Mom, but Tybalt is trying to actually keep the family involved, you don’t make it easy.” she chided her mother. In a lot of ways Bly never grew up.
The older woman narrowed her eyes, “Look you, I don’t need to hear that shit from you too. And stop trying to distract me, you haven’t answered my questions!”
Slade shrugged her shoulders and laughed, “Oh but it’s so easy!” she laughed harder as her mother made a rude gesture at her. “Look, I saw the ad while me and some friends were looking through jobs, and it interested me. Maybe it will be an adventure!” she shrugged. “Who knows. Maybe I’ll make a good impression and I can introduce them to the network later?” she said coyly.
“You could have plenty of adventure on a networked ship.” Bly countered.
“Oh where you are at least friends with the captain or Aunt Hedva knows the purser slash ships mother on every ship? No thanks. I’ll have my adventure on my own. Look these guys have a decent reputation, I wouldn't take a job that didn’t meet certain standard, and If I don’t like what I find I’ll bail and take a network job.”
“You better. And You better call me.” BLy said.
“Well I’ll at least call Father, he’s the one that will be a career help to me being a Doctor and all.” Slade smirked.
Bly looked off screen, “Why did she have to get the most sass out of all of them?” she complained. “If I didn’t love you so much I’d hate you.” Bly admitted.
“Like looking in the mirror ey mom?” Slade said before she waggled her brows. “Look I have to get going so I don’t miss my transport. I’ll touch base after I get settled in.” she said pausing for a moment. She wished she could reach out mentally and touch her mothers mind, sooth her worries, but they were worlds away. “I’m gonna be fine. I’m a Slade!” she said winking.
“Yeah well… before I became tough I went through hell and back three times over, I want you to be the me I was after all that.” Bly said somberly.
Slade gave her a sloppy grin, “Damn mom.. You think those years learning how to stab and shoot was for nothing? Aint nothing coming after this that aint welcome.” Slade said slapping her own ass.
“GROSS!” Slade heard her younger sister yell in the background.
“YOU’RE GROSS EVIE!” Slade yelled back, “OK I have to go!” she said grabbing her now closed bag and shut off the screen just as her sister tried to yell back some insult, she was certain her phone would be full of insulting messages in ten seconds flat. She’d have to laugh about that later, but for now, she was almost late.
