“Hey, D.” The Sensor specialist called out from under the control panel he had wedged himself. “Are you aware that your navigational sensor array had been hard-wired directly into the power assembly for the deflector dish? I mean, I guess if you were in a pinch and needed the extra power I could see this...but why?” He laughed. He was loving this ship. He loved the blend of Starfleet with the ingenuity of people that were allowed to do what needed to be done regardless of regulations. He had learned some odd tricks.
The woman smiled as she was called D. It was usually a human who called her called her that due to how her name was produced. “Well, there was… well…” she stopped and made a face. “Well, there was this incident when we got caught in a nebula.” Did that explain it enough without her having to explain that she used it to get them out of a very odd place.
He slid out and looked up at her. There was something about her that was easy to be around. She so very much reminded him of Sarah and it made him smile. “You know what?” He started. “Don’t tell me, I don’t think I want to know.” He let out a belly laugh. “I can fix it. I can probably even get the power input up to the same level if you think you need it.”
“Yeah, one of those things you Fleeters don’t have to worry about often,” Dixoho said watching what he was doing with interest. “We need it. Trust me.” She muttered it had saved them a few times since she had done it but she was sure that gregnol would appreciate it being done properly.
“Yeah, most of us aren’t lucky enough to get to serve on a sweet vessel like this.” Coming from someone else, it might have sound as sarcasm but the Sensor Specialist’s pure appreciation for the Mary Rose had been easy to see from the moment he stepped foot on it. He set to work, not even thinking to ask what she could have meant by her final comment.
The woman rolled her eyes at the man before she sat back in the chair that she had been spinning on previously. “I guess some of us are just lucky like that.”
“Well, then I guess I am too.” He started from under the console. “I ran into you and got stuck climbing around in the most, uh, uniquely wired navigation array that I have ever seen.” He had figured shortly after stepping on the ship that most of the repairs to this ship had been made on the fly as needed. It wasn’t often a civilian ship was able to visit a shipyard. “You want me to have a talk with the maniac who did this to you?” He teased.
“I don’t think Jeassaho would appreciate it when she got a nasty shock doing it,” Dixoho said thinking of the small blonde. “Plus if she could have done it the proper way she would have. She’s one of you or she was.” Dixoho added thoughtfully. She had no idea if the Captain’s wife was still Starfleet or not.
Well, that explained some of it. Nathan thought to himself as he disrupted the power in the relay in order to avoid the exact shock she was speaking of. “If you are wondering, I should be done in about two to three hours.” He added as he kept working.
“I wasn’t wondering. I am enjoying watching someone else work.” It was true that she would long hours. She enjoyed her work but it didn’t change the hours or strain sometimes on her. She needed to remember she wasn’t a 100% fit and why she would never make it in Starfleet as a Flight Control Officer.
“I imagine that is quite satisfying.” He laughed. “Doesn’t happen often to us enlisted folk, so you will have to let me know how that is.”
“How are you enlisted?” The woman shook her head at that knowledge. She knew Officers with less knowledge than him and certainly fewer work ethics than him.
“I didn’t have the patience for the academy.” The man replied. “I couldn’t wait to get out of my parent's house when I was a kid and enlisted. I have been approached about making the jump from enlisted to officer.” He made a few more adjustments to the relay he was installing before he continued. “I have been in Starfleet for my entire adult life, served on a dozen ships, taught at the academy.” He paused as she smiled. “That is enough for me.
“I didn’t think everyone went to the Academy? I thought some people could do it on a ship. Long distance learning?” The woman wondered. Interesting in him just a little. She had never had the chance to really just talk to a Starfleet Office or enlisted.
“You can once you have enough experience.” He replied as he made the finishing touches on the updated hotwire before coming out from under the console. “I like being a fleeter versus an officer. My girl is a Commander and her life is complicated. I just want to work on my sensors and power relays.” He grinned.
“From what you’ve said about your girl though I don’t think everyone is like that. Seems pretty unique?” She wondered seeing the grin on his face.
Nathan let out a laugh as he started the diagnostic. “Oh, she is.” He smirked as he took a seat in the chair not far from Dixaho. “Still not my cup of tea.” He replied as he absently twisted in the chair. “So, what of this man of yours?” He finally asked. “I seem to be vomiting my relationship with you. It has to be your turn now.”
“No way…” The woman span one more time in her chair before she stopped and looked at him. “If you must know he is a bounty hunter sometimes.” The woman admitted with a small smirk waiting for the look on his face.
Nathan couldn’t help the surprise that crossed his face that was almost instantly replaced with amusement. “That,” He started with a pause. “For some reason doesn’t surprise me.” He smirked, “You strike me as the temper of danger type.” He grinned.
“Tell me about it.” The woman couldn’t help but get herself dragged more and more into danger. First stealing the colony details to protect people and running away with the details to the last foray into the mirror universe.
“Ok, so…” Nathan started. “You like dangerous men, but I bet you don’t put up with their power trips.” He spun in his chair stopping when he was facing her. “You find the best part of them and give them a chance to be...less,” he was struggling with the words to do. “Alpha male?” He laughed. “I am probably talking out my ass, Sarah always says I don’t understand people and should stick with sensors.
“He tries.” The woman laughed. Micheal was Micheal and there wasn’t anything that she could do about it at all and she was pretty sure that she didn’t want to change him at all. “You seem to understand very well.” The woman assured.
“Sarah is a lot like you.” Nathan grinned as he continued to swivel. “Or you are a lot like her?” He mused. “She sees the best in people and doesn’t put up with people’s crap. You remind me of her.” He grinned at the thought of his little sister. “Maybe that is why I like you already.”
“I try. Not always that easy.” She told him finally seeing the difference between him and the man she had met six months ago who knew her so well. “Maybe. It is. Kindred spirits.” She wondered if he would want to hang out another time.
Nathan smiled and nodded as she finally spun the chair around taking in where they were. “I love your ship.” He grinned. “I can see why you would like it here.” He gave her a wink. “Anything else you need me to tinker with?”
“If I show it to you, you will either have the ship impounded for being a danger or never leave.” The woman laughed. There were always jobs ongoing, she dared not share them with him or he might never go back to his ship. “Let me buy you and your missus dinner. We can have a double date as payment?”
Nathan paused for a moment both in movement and in speech. He loved the idea but didn’t know how Lexie would deal with it. He thought for a moment. Between the look on his new friend's face and the fact that he didn’t want to let her down he nodded. “Its a date.” He replied easily getting Lex to agree was going to be the hard part.
The woman smiled brightly. She knew Michela would most likely hate it but he would do it for her and that was what mattered to her. “Well find out the time from your complicated Officer and I’ll find somewhere fun.” The woman mused not knowing the turmoil the man was going through trying to work out how to approach the other woman.
Just as he was going to reply the diagnostic beeped its completion. Turning to the console he tapped a few commands. “Looks like the rewiring is going to hold and not blow you up.” He smiled. “Well, at least not yet.” He knew he was avoiding the question but that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to at least try.
“Not yet is our motto.” The woman said looking at him. “You look like you need to ask something.” Dixoho was very intuned with things and could see someone wanting to ask something.
“Nah,” Nathan said with a shake of his head. “I will just wait and be surprised.” He gave her a wink as he rose from his chair and let out a sigh. “It was great meeting you D.” He gave her a nod. “Until we meet again.” He laughed.
“Until we meet again then Nathan.” She said musing what he could mean but she let it go. She didn’t need to be suspicious all the time. It wasn’t healthy and he hadn’t really done anything to warrant it.
