Rescue Squad

Posted on Sat Sep 14th, 2019 @ 8:23am by Commodore Ledeya ‘Ed’ Ehestri (*) & Commander Adamya Ryon & Major Levi Drake

Mission: Cosmos
Location: Shuttle Type 9, en route to Daucina
Timeline: After "Failure to Report"
1056 words - 2.1 OF Standard Post Measure

With a few taps of the console, Ryon set the shuttle on a course that would bring it to the troubled seabase. He turned to face the small team. In his former life, he would have been the one pacing the Bridge waiting for word on the fate of his away teams. Now that he was no longer a Captain, he could be part of the team. "We are walking into the unknown. Chances are about 50-50 that when we arrive nothing will be wrong, or that things have gone bad and our people will need rescuing. Hope for the first option, prepare for the second."

"You know Agrax is going to be peeved that Marines are coming to rescue her." The Science Officer said looking the marines up and down with a hint of a smile at her teasing. Unlike a lot of ships, the Chief Security Officer went out of her way to build good relationships with the Marines. "Do we know anything?" Halla wondered not sure if her being on this mission was a wise idea but it was to a science base so they needed more scientist.

"We are getting sensor ghosts," Ryon replied. He sort of left the Marine comment alone. They were walking into a potential combat zone and he felt much safer with them around. Explaining what he meant by ghosts, he added, "The seabase has some kind of dampening field surrounding it. Its labs seem to be expanded and drawing much more power than originally designed. There is no record of what kind of experiments they were running, but we pick up sensor ghosts scattered around the base."

"Minimal intel, no communications, completely unknown whether there's anyone left to rescue." Levi peered over at the sensor readings. "I've been in worse drops. My team will insert first, bracket the rest of you. Stay within line-of-sight until we know our own communicators work in there."

Halla just stayed quiet and carried on with her readings of the base. The boys could discuss things like that as long as someone was there when things went bad. The Petty Officer was just there to check over readings and guide them through the base if it came to it.

"Of course," Ryon nodded. He checked his phaser one last time, maximum stun. Going back to the control panel, he resumed manual flying. "Almost there," he announced to the crew of the shuttle.

Halla thought to say something but the ship suddenly dropped lower into the atmosphere and the top deck of the base came into view. "We are really going to go under the surface and have a quick scope around before we dock right to see if we can find the dampening field first?" She questioned.

“Of course,” the Bajoran nodded. Although he agreed, Ryon knew that dampening fields were usually impossible to see. “If the base itself is generating the dampening field, there’s a good chance we won’t be able to see anything from the outside.”

"I hope you all brought swimming costumes just encase," Halla said with a small smirk as they started to land.

"Let's hope we won't need them," Ryon stated as he tried to adjust the power levels to the inertial dampeners. As soon as the ride smoothed out a bit he turned on outer lights to help the occupants see, the sensors would be virtually useless with the dampening field active.

"It is pretty dark out there." Halla murmured trying to see out the main window. It was pitch black and the outer lights weren't piercing anything through the darkness.

"Flying blind and without sensors," Ryon shook his head as he read the panel. He quickly adjusted the shuttle's course to bring them out of the water. "We'll just have to breach and go room to room, I don't want to crash us into the side of the seabase," he explained.

"Time to knock down the door," Ryon stated as he pulled the shuttle out of the water and brought it to the landing pad on the roof of the facility. As the shuttle settled, the Bajoran stood and checked his phaser. "Set your phasers to maximum stun, Marines, that door seems to be in our way," he ordered.

"Rodriguez, Shan, clear us that entry point." Levi barked, motioning to the entrance. The two grunts darted into position either side of the door. Within a moment, the Andorian private had unlocked the manual release and indicated that he was ready to open up. Levi and one of his men moved up to join, then in a practised manoeuvre forced the doorway open and slipped silently inside.

It was dark in the corridor beyond. No lights were active. No sounds. A gentle, monotonous sound of dripping in the distance. The flashlight on Levi's phaser rifle came on in a fraction of a second, lighting up a cone in front of him. Nothing moved. Absolute stillness. "Clear perimeter and hold," he growled at the man next to him, giving it a few seconds before glancing back over his shoulder and motioning for the rest of the landing party to join them.

Halla stayed very quiet as she started scanning with her tricorder as all the people around her played with weapons. "Well, this isn't horror film worthy at all." The Trill commented as her tricorder kept finding biosignals and then they disappeared just as quickly.

"You hear that?" Rodriguez, the young private upfront hissed out loud. Levi gave him a little glare for speaking up and not concentrating on covering the entry hall.

"Stow it, private," Levi growled back. He glanced over at the other Officers. "Fifty meters to the turbolifts, assuming they have power. We can try Jefferies tubes, but..." he shook his head. "I don't like taking us through there without knowing what else is happening down here."

Nodding his head, Ryon replied, "Agreed. We are walking into an unknown situation, no reason to walk us into an ambush point without reason." He nodded to the Marine as if to tell him to lead on.
