Zakiel tossed and turned for what he thought was hours but it was days and the words he spoke made no sense if you did not speak Betazoid. But the fever finally shifter and he settled into a deep sleep that if it was not for the old-fashioned medical equipment the colony had people would have presumed him dead. He came aware suddenly when the pain started reaching through his sleep pulling him back. “Mmm…” He wondered quietly.
Ona popped her head up. She'd been sleeping upright with her head down on the bed where Zee was in a coma like state. "Oh thank god!" She squeezed his hand. "Zee, can you hear me?" Her heart took off and she said every prayer she could think of that he was coming back to her. The thought of being a single mother was terrifying to her.
If anyone had asked him that he would wake from the most pleasant dream to most instantiable pain imaginable he would have requested to go back to the lake he had been dreaming about. He felt weak and his throat was scratchy but he couldn’t move to find his usual glass of water on the nightstand. Why couldn’t he move? What had happened? The man let out curse word as he blinked a few times as he came back to the room and started taking the beeping of the machines and the fact he ached from the top of his head to the bottom of his toes. “Ona?” He whispered looking at her confused.
"Yeah. I'm so glad to see you awake. It was scary for a bit there." She squeezed his hand again. "But don't worry, you're going to be fine." She brushed aside her long blond hair which had fallen partially in her face while she slept. "How do you feel?"
“Something bite me?” He murmured trying to understand what was going on and to remove the oxygen mask that was on his face. The extra oxygen was making him woozy and he felt sick if he was honest but he didn’t want to admit that there and then when she was looking at him with such concern.
"Yeah, a Tarrellian wolf spider. They're not even native to this rock, it must have been a stowaway on a ship." Ona helped him get the mask off and ran her ringers through his hair. "You scared me," she admitted in a fake grumpy tone, feeling a bit vulnerable about how close she had come to losing him.
"I hate spiders." The man said simply as he smiled a little trying to stop the foggy feeling wanting to send him back to sleep. The Doctor came in surprised to the man awake looking groggy but alert enough. It was nice to see the man awake especially when he had come in barely breathing.
"Nice to see you awake Zakiel. You gave everyone quite the scare." The man commented on.
Ona yawned. Propping herself up against his bed all night hadn't done wonders for being able to sleep, but she was so happy to see him awake she didn't care. "Weird situation," she commented, her suspicious nature coming to the surface. "You haven't made anyone mad recently, anyone I don't know about have you?"
"Only you and I am sure you do not want to off me." The man quickly assured not having considered what her mind was considering. Do not think like that... He said mentally. The Doctor smiled a little as he started to take readings.
This was true. Ona found him a bit clingy and then she felt guilty for pushing him away and allowed him in, only to push him away again when he got too close. But she certainly didn't want him dead. They had a strange relationship but they had always been there for each other. "You should rest, as long as you promise me you'll wake again."
The sick man made a weak cross across his heart to signify he would indeed wake up again. He had so much to live for now, her and the baby. Even if 'her' sometimes did not want him in her life because he brought something that she hadn't experienced before.
Ona snorted at the gesture and smiled. "Fine then, rest." She ran her fingers through his hair briefly and settled down against his bed, hoping she could take another nap.
The Doctor just shook his head watching the pair as he carried on his check. It was easy to see how much the pair meant to each other but also how afraid the woman looked sometimes. Hopefully, this even might have knocked some sense into her and made her realise you couldn't love without being afraid. Before he even got halfway through them both of them were sound asleep.
