Reessem Nubohn paced back and forth across the sickbay as she looked at the people lying on the bio beds – The Captain, First Officer, Chief Engineer to name a few people that she could see who should have been running the ship now in comas. She had watched fascinated the rise and fall of the shallow breaths before she turned back to the rest of the assembled persons. She had barely met any of them before apart from to get their names and allocate them quarters somewhere on the ship, none of them had bothered with her until now.
“So who is in charge now then?” She wondered slightly scared by the fighting or perhaps worse that might start without Gregnol to put a stoppers on people’s egos and bad attitudes.
Once Doctor Olsam patched her up and gave her meds, the caitain secretary had returned to her quarters briefly. She needed to grab her kit. Which, unlike a medical or engineering kit, it simple held a few data padds, an small hand held padd, that was as big as an Iphone from earth's past. She returned to sickbay. She was wondering all sorts of things. Stardust entered sickbay while looking at her iphone type of equipment.
"Whom ever has the experience in captaining a ship" returned bluntly "I don't see me captaining anytime soon. Purrrrhaps Doctor Olsam. He was a Starfleet officer, a long time ago in a galaxy far far away."
At the mention of his name for captain, Doctor Olsam looked like a nocturnal mammal in headlights. Him? Captain? He'd never captained anything in his life, save for the Starfleet Academy Culinary Competition Team. They'd won three years in a row against stiff competition from the Romulan Imperial War College and the Vulcan Science Academy, but did that really qualify him for leading a starship? Somehow, he thought not. He was best suited to working in Sickbay.
The old El Aurian looked around at the assembled crew, waiting to see if the doctor would speak up. When Olsam hesitated, he decided to speak up. "Back while I was still in Starfleet, I assumed command of the USS Robert April after her captain and the rest of her command crew were killed by spacial-temporal anomaly," he replied.
"Good experience, I ran a small crew on my shuttle and have been trained from birth to be a leader and warrior," said the only Orion quietly from the corner as he was picking the dirt from underneath his finger nails with one of his smaller daggers.
Olsam cut his eyes to Saija, with whom he'd already had one run in. The man seemed to have quite the temper. And he was always wielding something sharp. That might work on a Klingon bird-of-prey, but it hardly seemed like experience that might be helpful in their present situation. But he didn't say so. After all, the man had a dagger in his hand.
"Right, uh ummm, I'm no medical wizard or anything. But purrrrhaps, we should look and see if any other crew came across this sickness or maybe one of us, is carrying the cure in our blood?" stated Stardust.
"Or look at what similarities we all have and why we could be immune," pointed out Humili, who took to leaning against the single empty bed that remained. "It could be within our blood, but it could also have to do with species? Save for Reessem here... none of us are human."
Rokar shook his head as he too leaned against something; this time a wall console. "If it is some sort of blood-born pathogen, then I doubt it's naturally-occurring," he replied. "It would take a pretty advanced bug to get past Borg tech."
Saija was pissed, it was the first he was hearing of Borg tech on the ship; "Borg tech?"
The security officer turned to the department head with a quirked brow. "Yes," he replied. "I've been busy working on removing it since we left port."
Saija made a note to bully his underling later.
Stardust looked shocked upon hearing anything remotely related to Borg tech. However, she did recall something she over heard years ago about the Robert April, not the captain, but the ship itself. Which she found rather odd, that the ship baring the captain's name was strike in that fashion.
'So it effects humans. Purrfect.' she thought, but stated "I'm not a fan of anything relating to Borg stuff. Even if it has been transformed into useful Federation. However, if humans are effective, then we know non humans won't be. At least for the time being. We do have other fields to explore, then base our hopes on tech from the Swiss Zombies. It has to be something we are over looking."
Stardust paused, her lips puckered then shifted left and right as she thought quickly. When it came to her she spoke it "I heard rumors about humans while working comm lines at the capital of UFP, that some humans still carry the Augment gene in them. More diluted after what 300 plus years transferring it via repurrrducing? You think that might be a case to look into, also, we have three peeps with expurrrence and that works for me, to call the two captain and XO?"
"Just remember, the fifteenth Rule of Acquisition" Stardust stated openly and seriously "Dead men close no deals." The caitain wanted them to keep focus and not get side track on anything. She wanted to remind them of what was at stake.
"Most humans," Humili corrected. "Reessem doesn't have it and doesn't show signs of symptoms. If we're overlooking anything, it's that. I would also much prefer we not count everyone out to the point of naming a new Captain. They're in a coma, not dead." The Trill eyed the collected group of misfits, not hiding her distrust. They may have been all for the same goal, but none of them seemed to go about it in a collaborative manner. That spelled trouble, in her dual-minded head. "There's a chance Reessem may have this Augment gene you're speaking of, but regardless, I think she holds the key."
"I agree Rueben would kill us all if he heard us discussing him and the others like they were dead. We need a leader sure but its temporary." She glanced around at the group, the only one who had brought anything to the table so far had been the Caitan who she had yet to properly meet formally and Humili. "So you want my blood huh?" The Administrator murmured looking at the Trill relieved that she was bringing some much needed order to the group. She had always respected Trills especially joined Trills for there wisdom and years of experience.
Stardust was jolting this all down for recorded keeping sake. She put her two cents worth in. She also, wanted to make sure, what was spoken here, could be used later on in history.
'Future history, if any.' she thought was she wrote
Looking up and over to Humili and her eyes spoke volumes, which was a bit of surprise and pure wonderment at hearing that some one was part Augment "So it is true. WOW! Now that's cool."
Even though, not all those that were and currently Augments, were anything like those of Khan. But, Stardust, was happy to know someone who was and she would, at some point ask speak to them on the subject. But for now, the caitain jotted what Humili stated and the others.
"It's a potential that she has Augment blood." Humili pointed out. "I wouldn't count it out, honestly, but we should do tests. Reessem, that's up to you." She then gave a respectable nod in Mott's direction. "And up to you as well. My theory's only a theory, of course."
"Cross-analysis would suggest that your theory is correct; it seems to be affecting humans and those with physiology most similar to humans," Olsam confirmed.
Reessem held out her arm for someone to take the blood. "As far as i am aware i am human i grew up on earth on a tiny island in the Mediterranean sea." The small woman said gently as she looked at the small group then the nearest bed which held the Executive Officer deep in her own corner. "So who wants to take my blood?"
"Want is a vague term." Humili eyed the collected group. Toe-stepping was not in her nature, but she was technically a biologist by trade. Somewhere in her collected head, she had the knowledge to at least take blood and put it under a scanner. "... I can certainly help, though."
Saija shrugged his shoulders before walking over to Rueben's body and stood at the foot of his bed as if he were his honor guard.
"Oh," Olsam said, as if he'd been awaken from a long coma. "I'm a doctor. I guess I should do that, huh?"
