As the kids played together in the water they never suspected that the sandy shelf under their feet had been undercut by tides and currents. Suddenly the self gave way and the children quickly went from a half meter of water to full 2 meters of murky water. A fun afternoon quickly turned into pandemonium as Yad and Deacon raced into the water. While Yad was able to grab up Rahda, Lia and Din quickly, but the two others Evaste and Liviana surfaced a couple feet away being draw away with the current, coughing up water and calling for their father.

Hearing their cries, Lhaes shot to his feet and raced to the edge but as soon as his feet touched the water, he froze. Panic appeared on his features as anxious grey eyes scanned the surface. The Romulan however, stood rooted to the spot, unable to move any further into the water. Fear held him in place, his breath caught in his throat as he watched helplessly. "Help them!" he called out, fearing for their lives even though they were the necessary safety features.

Deacon dove into the water coming up right next to the girls. Both looked scared as Deacon pulled them parallel to the beach and out of the rip tide, but not terrified. "Come on girls kick your feet, now." he said softly, the girls started to scissor kick, legs as straight as broomsticks. Their father had raised a couple of brave ones here. And right now, he was a good 50 meters from shore with these two brave little girls. Floats or not it was going to be a bear to get them in, and he didn’t want to scar them for life.

“Now your Dad told me you were two were adventurous,” Deacon said smiling, “but trying to swim out to the middle of my lake, and spoil my surprise? Can’t have it, so now back to the beach the both of you.”

“I do have to say you’re fast, but who’s the fastest? I bet it’s you” he said pointing to one, “or maybe you” he said pointing to the other.

The girls giggled, thinking this a game rather than them having been in any real danger. "I'm faster I'm faster!" Liviana cried out, splashing her legs rather than making any proper swimming movement.

Evaste however had a different train of thought. "Surprise? What kind of surprise?"

“Now if I told you that, by definition, it wouldn’t be a surprise.” Deacon grinned, but as he looked at Evaste’s furrowed brow as she sat there treading water he relented,,,, sort of, “Ah OK, I’ll spoil some of the surprise, so listen up you two.” He said in a conspiratorial tone, “About 200 meters down the beach is a hidden inlet that leads to even better hidden grotto, and in that grotto MERMAIDS live.” The girls eye went wider than saucers, “Now the only reason I letting you in on this part of the surprise is that I want to SEE who’s a faster swimmer, so we’re going to race to your dad, whoever wins gets to shake a mermaid’s hand first.”

By now the food had been sizzling away on the grill for some time. Lorenzo flipped a fillet of fish and judged it ready. He picked up a tray and quickly removed it, and several other fillets from the grill. he grinned as he checked he other food and served it up, "I have food ready! Who is hungry!"

Lhaes turned his head only briefly, before turning back towards the water. He was pacing anxiously, his feet barely treading water. His eyes fixed on the man keeping his girls afloat, listening as he talked to them like they could swim.

Behind him, Galan toddled towards the chef, eagerly reaching up towards the hot barbecue. He had never seen such an item before and, ignorant as the one year old that he was, he wanted to grab the food that he saw was sizzling away just out of his reach.

Just in time Lorenzo noticed the small child reaching for the hot food. He smiled and scooped Galan up into his arms, out of reach of the sizzling food. "That is hot Galan" he said "You will hurt yourself if you touch it". He placed Galan down beside the table he had placed the cooked food on. "You can have these ones" He passed Galan a small piece of soft, fresh bread, something that he knew was safe you a one year old to eat.

Meanwhile the girls had touched their feet on the beach again. One of them running and jumping into their father's arms screaming about how they were going to be the first to shake a mermaids hand. The other looked little sad then until Deacon whispered something to her, then she triumphantly marched to her father and proudly announced that she'd be the first one to feed the mermaids.

Kneeling down, Lhaes scooped them both up in his arms and hugged them tightly. "Don't you go out that far again," he chided them in a mix of anger and relief, before turning to Deacon. "Thank you for getting them...thank you..." He couldn't express it enough, and he didn't really know how either. A little colour returned to his face as he set the girls down, but the anxiety didn't completely drain away.

Deacon felt a lump quickly develop in his throat as he looked at Lhaes hug his children, it was all he could do to give the father a short nod and wipe a tear from his eye, "Damn smoke," he said with a grin, "Hey chef how about giving me some spare ribs, why don't cha? Foolish children are running me ragged."

"One moment my good friend" Lorenzo grinned as he picked up an empty plate. He scooped some ribs off the Barbecue and placed them on the plate, returning to the table he quickly garnished them and poured on some of his homemade barbecue sauce. Lastly he tossed on a chunk of fresh, still steaming bread, with which Deacon could mop up any remaining sauce. "Here you go chief, enjoy!"

Lorenzo returned to the Barbecue and picked up another plate, "What about you doctor? What can I get for you? The clams are nearly ready, as is this mighty lobster, or if you wish there are still some more ribs." He gestured to the table "And there is also plenty of salads and fresh bread."

"I will try the lobster," Lhaes commented, feeling like getting his hands really dirty. "The girls may want to help me with this." He looked over beyond the man and saw Galan munching happily away on a crust of bread. The Romulan frowned as his gaze returned to the chef. "How did Galan get there?" he asked, wondering why he hadn't noticed his child was no longer where he'd left him.

"Have to say Chef," Deacon said trying to wrench the last bit of meat from the bone with his teeth, "this Irish cuisine of yours is mind-bogglingly good!"

"My good friend, I am honored by your compliment, Irish cuisine is always good, but just wait until you try my Italian dishes" Lorenzo grinned as he served the Lobster for Lhaes "Do not worry about Galan my dear, I put him there, our of harms way"
