The Butcher of Betazed sat there watching the man in front of him wondering why the computer would spill out this man would be the best possible replacement for Humphrey. The man had been there all through the war and when they had burned a planet to the ground even with people they loved on. “So, do you have any idea why I’ve asked you here?” He wondered as the door chimed.
Nathan was sitting in the chair with an easy, practiced, indifference that had served him well. He looked over the man that controlled his future, well most everyone’s on the ship and merely shook his head. “No, sir.” He replied easily.
“Enter?” He called knowing that no one would have gotten past his guard unless it was someone he has requested.
Nathan turned his head as the door parted. He had expected to see her when he had felt her earlier. He knew she was on board, but he hadn’t expected to see here here. He cleared his throat as he turned back towards the Captain.
Alexis walked in and for a second paused as she saw Nathan and realised, she or he was being set up. They both went well back with the Butcher. “Sirs.” She whispered stepping in looking so much different from the days she wore the uniform. The dress she wore oozed all-out romantic elegance, the fitted gown was silver and barely there with no straps.
“Yes hello, Alexis.” The Captain said looking her over. He was sure he made the right choice with her.
“Are you giving me a gift, sir?” Nathan replied as he looked over the women he had spent most of his life in love with. She had changed and not of her own free will and that made him both angry and sad. “I already have a wife.” He turned his attention back to the man setting them up.
The word wife didn’t make Alexis react at all, she was fully aware of the fact Nathan had given up on her a long time ago. She was just relieved most of the time that laws protected them now. “Well you see Lieutenant I need an Executive Officer and you seem the most loyal.”
“Well, that seems sad,” Nathan replied with a laugh and a look that was bordering on deadly, like normal. “Whatever you need sir.” He added as he looked at the vision of Betazoid beauty in the room.
Gregnol was nothing but pleased with the pain it was inflicting on the pair, he could still remember the moment he had torn them apart. “She comes as part of the deal as you will need someone watching your back.” The man said smirking as she watched for every reaction. He saw Alexis stare at the younger man for a second before she watched as a box was chucked at him that easily held his new rank pips.
Nathan easily caught the box clicking it open before setting it on the desk. “Thank you, sir.” He replied as he cleared his throat. He knew exactly what the Captain was doing. He wasn’t stupid. He remembered the glee on the man’s face when he had taken Lexie from him. He looked the betazoid up and down, playing into the role as he was expected. “Well, this will make things awkward with the missus.” He joked.
“I am just glad I am protected from your posioner by Terran law,” Alexis said simply as she shrugged. The man watching them intently snorted with almost glee as he watched the events play out. It was exciting to see two people who should have possibly been together being so cool towards each other now.
“You can work out your relationship alone. I don’t need to watch this display any longer.” Gregnol said by way of dismissing the pair.
“As you wish, sir,” Nathan said as he rose to his feet and plucked up the box. “Shall we?” He asked offering his elbow to Lexie as he moved around the chair and angled towards the door.
The woman promptly ignored his offer before she moved out the door. She knew the layout of the ship and led him to the Executive Officers Office was. “Your Office sir.” She said quietly as she let him enter his new office.
Nathan stepped past the beautifully dressed Betazoid and before she could follow him, he gripped her and pulled her with him. Pressing her against the wall he kissed her. Kissed her like he had spent years waiting to do. When the kiss ended he took a step back. “I am sorry, Lexie.” He whispered.
Her world stopped for a second, her plump lips pressed into his, her mouth opened slightly in surprise. “No, you are not.”
“I am sorry I didn’t protect you better.” He said simply before turning away from her. Kissing her had been everything he had thought about for so long but nothing all at the same time. The sensation puzzled him as he moved through the office with ease. He needed distance from her, from Dixaho, from this ship, from his life. The hits just kept on coming. Approaching the replicator pressed his hand against the wall. “Do you still like sweet tea or did that die too?”
“Wasn’t your place to protect me. How could have you changed any of it?” The woman said softly as she sat on the edge of the tea. “Of course I love sweet tea. Can’t beat that out of someone.” Alexis would have normally gone to him and tried to ease the stress from his shoulder but she wasn’t sure what to do.
Before she had even responded to his question he had ordered the two tea's and moved to sit on the sofa off to the side. He set her glass on the table as he took a seat and settled onto the couch. He knew how Betazoids were treated and it killed him to do nothing, but that is what he did.
Alexis let the silence reign, it was easier to do that then think on anything. She took to sipping her tea watching him. She could feel him on the edge of her mind, she wanted to just accept him in but she couldn’t.
Nathan didn’t mind the silence. He sat in silence with Dix on a regular basis. The thought brought a smile to the edge of his mouth as he took a sip. “Polite society would dictate that I ask how you have been, but I feel like that would only garner me a sarcastic response.” He looked at her. “If your experience has been anything like the Betazoids on this ship, I..uh…”
“I was put in the breeding camps.” She told him cutting off anything else he wanted to say.
“I know.” Those two simple words took everything he had to squeak out. The quiver in his hand betrayed the calmness he hoped to project at her words. He had been told. Many times the fate of his mate and had felt helpless. He knew better than to say anything about how he had felt. He knew her, she would want to make him feel better and he didn’t deserve that. He opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out.
Alexis slowly stood up and moved to the man sitting on his lap easily as if she had never been away. She moved to straddle his lap giving him no chance to escape. The only difference was the material of clothing between them. “No, you don’t know.” She whispered taking his tea from her.
Nathan watched as she moved. He was both surprised and not surprised by her actions. The Betazoid he had known had been sweet and docile until pushed. This woman was changed. God, he had missed her. After she had taken his glass his now free hands came to rest on her hips. “What are you doing, Lexie?” He asked.
“What I normally do.” She whispered looking into his eyes. How could she explain any of it to him? “What are you doing?” She wondered her hands going to his shoulders.
Nathan sucked in a breath at her closeness before his lips claimed hers. His hands moved up his back and into her hair pulling her to him. He broke off the kiss, “Wait, wait Lex.” He said pushing her away from him, he needed the distance between to get his wits about him. “Don’t do this.” He didn’t know if his heart was racing from the kiss, her closeness or panic.
“Do what?” She asked as pushed her away. She slowly backed up a little and put her heels back on the floor standing up.
Before thinking he rose to his feet and grabbed her by the arm. “You don’t have to be what they trained you to be. You aren’t that person.” He turned her to look at him. “Not with me.”
“You have no idea what they have trained me to be Nathan,” Alexis said softly as she moved his hand off of her.
“God, you women are impossible,” Nathan said under his breath. “Ok fine. Why don’t you tell me then?” His voice got louder as he spoke. “For once, will you stupid women just tell me the truth.” He was practically shouting.
“We have a child.” She said simply seeing the anger in his eyes.
Nathan’s hand dropped. It was as if the puppeteer and cut his strings. His legs gave out and he simply sank to the ground. His head lolled to one side as he fought to process what she had said. “I” He barely breath. “I don’t….I don’t believe you.” He was broken.
Alexis shook her head. She had gotten over the fact her daughter had been taken a long time ago somewhere safe, being here now was just a means to an end. “Well whether you do or don’t it doesn’t matter you won’t remember in a little bit anyway.” The woman said with a shrug.
“Why tell me this?” He asked once he finally started speaking. His sadness and shock being overruled by his anger.
“Because when Meeri is old enough I want her to know I told you.” She said softly. “They took my baby from me and hurt her. I killed them without even touching them, they didn’t even see it coming or know it was me but she's fine.” She added already feeling the righteous anger from him over the thought of his daughter being hurt. “But I'll probably never see my baby again because that is the price for her being safe.”
It was in that moment as Nathan processed what she was saying that the final division between them fell into place. She was no longer the women he had loved and he was no longer the man she needed. “I am sorry, Lex.” He replied sounding defeated but resolved. He was sorry but he also knew there was nothing he could do to change any of it.
“No, you aren't Nathan. You’re Terran.” She said simply as if that explained everything between them and to her it did. She moved to kneel in front of him looking at him carefully.
“You and Dix.” Nathan practically spat. “You both throw that around like it explains everything.” He looked up at her. “You don’t get to dismiss me because of where I happened to be born.” He simply shook his head, unable to say anything else.
“That is because the majority of Terran men treat us like bait. They use and abuse.” She said for a moment having some respect or the woman he married. She sounded like she kept him on his toes despite the fact her reputation preceded her.
“Right,” Nathan said. He looked at the face he had dreamed about for so long. “D throws it at me to rile me up.” He moved to stand up being sure not to come in contact with the Betazoid he used to love. “You say it with disgust as if you think of me as no different than them….Fine.” Moving to put some space between them. “I was mistaken this whole time.”
Alexis should have just done it quickly instead of talking to him. “You really thought we could go back to how things were? You're married?” She whispered staying kneeled on the floor.
“It doesn’t matter,” Nathan replied solemnly. “You already think the worst of me at least, she knows I am better.” He paused “Go back to your life, Alexis. Forget about me and I will go back to mine.”
“What life?” She laughed rising to her feet touching his hand gently. Did this man think that she actually enjoyed being a whore for any man who could protect her from beatings? “I’m sorry for what it’s worth.” She whispered as she dived into his mind.
“For what?” He started asked. The moment he felt her he knew what she was doing but couldn’t stop her. “L..” He started to say but stopped as he lost the ability. His mind now at her whim.
“I am sorry Imazdi.” She whispered brushing her lips against his for a moment before she worked through his mind. It wasn’t hard work shifting a thought here or there just to settle his mind off of her and forgetting the last hour.
Nathan couldn’t remember what he was going to say. It was as if it was on the tip of his tongue but he just couldn’t form it. “What?” He looked at her puzzling. “What were we talking about?”
“That this would be the last time we were alone like that.” She prompted gently as she pulled back out of reach. “You were telling me how much you love your wife and that you were sorry that I’ve been caught up in the games from your Captain.”
Nathan thought for a moment. Whatever might have made him think that she was wrong flitted from his mind like a butterfly. “She doesn’t believe that I love her.” He said so for no real reason. He shook his head, “Uh, but yes. I am sorry your life was disrupted by this. I will do what I can to get you transfered somewhere else if you like.”
Alexis shrugged a little. She didn’t mind being there at the moment, it wouldn’t be for long. “Thank you, Sir.” She said gently wishing she could share their daughter with him.
Nathan nodded his mind drifted to his wife unintentionally, bringing a smirk to his lips. “If you will excuse me, I have something I have to do.” He gave her a bow and turned to leave his new office. He needed to talk to Dix and he knew just how to get her attention.
