Mission 11 - Prospecting

Timeline: 2396
1136 words - 2.3 OF Standard Post Measure
Ledeya walked into the Astrometric lab and stopped as she noticed Karis talking with Lakeland. This was going to get complicated to say the least. She stood there patiently waiting until one then the other noticed her. She offered a smile to the pair.
“At ease I just came to discuss our route.” Ledeya could have called the woman to her office but it was nice to walk the ship and learn about the crew. They had become close after waiting for the senior officers after Daucine. Ledeya respected the young officer and her wisdom over science matters.
"Yes, Captain, of course." Karis reached up and tucked a strand of curly hair behind her ear. "What about our route?" She could guess, but the mark of a good science officer was never to assume.
Lake seemed torn and sort of busied himself unsure if he was supposed to be listening in or not. He settled for half doing something while he was listening to their conversation.
"I want to know how close we go to this place." Ledeya pulled out her PaDD and transferred the co-ordinate across to the astrometric display. It was a colony on a small m class planet that looked similar to earth with just a little more water.
"Fairly close actually, about a light-year away which in distance seems like a lot but it's not much for a starship." Karis hesitated to ask why.
Ledeya grinned. That was close enough for her if she was honest. “They have asked for assistance repairing their weather systems and we are potentially the nearest ship.” The Commodore revealed. “I was interested to see how close we would be or whether it would be better for another ship to attend Lieutenant.”
"Ah . . . well, that works out well then. I wouldn't mind a little away mission myself, it's been a while since I've been anywhere but a starship or a station." Karis seemed to zone out for a minute, thinking about the last planet she'd stepped foot on.
"Yeah," Lake joked, thinking his new superior officer was a little bit of an odd one. She'd spouted philosophy at him a couple of times already. "Weekend getaway to the lake." He resisted wiggling his eyebrows at Ledeya.
“I will see if you are needed. I am hoping that it will be a quick fix.” Ledeya assured thinking that she might need to send Karis if her Chief of Engineering did not arrive soon. She didn’t let on that it was a Betazoid colony just yet.
"Understood ma'am," Karis said, trying not to get her hopes up too much. "Well, I'll just . . . leave you two alone then if there's nothing else?" She quickly picked up a PADD and went to the other side of the room.
"She's a bit quirky," Lake said with his eyebrows raised. "Nice though."
Ledeya opened her mouth to say something then had the realisation about where Karis potentially knew about her and Lake from. She brushed her hair out of her eyes and rolled her eyes... my the deities that Bolian. "That lift." She said almost to herself as she watched the woman walk to the other side of the room.
"Yeah . . . . she won't tell anyone though. Don't worry. I mean given that she's dated a former commanding officer, I would think she'd understand a bit better than most people."
"Her story is a little deeper than that." The woman admitted looking back and Lake for a moment wondering how they had gotten there from where they had been three months ago.
"Everyone's always is. Lieutenant," Lake said with a smile on his face as he turned toward Karis. "Stop being so shy, we know you know so it's okay."
Ledeya stood a little straighter and shrugged at the man. It was not down to her to decide really if things stayed so secrete. It bore no harm to her, it would be nicer to keep it quieter but Karis was fully aware already. "Please I do not wish to impact on your department."
"Oh well . . . I don't really care, I mean it's none of my business. I'm not that great of a conversationalist anyway, I have to be comfortable with the person otherwise I jabber on about silly things like whether the chicken or the egg came first."
"We are in a relationship but we aren't married," Ledeya said as if that would make a difference. "I did lie there." It was not like her to lie but she had thought that the little lie was enough to be getting on with.
"Ah, well I certainly understand why you did. That was a very awkward turbo lift ride. I was a bit stunned afterwards. But you are a friend of Ryon's and honestly Captain, I trust you. I don't expect you to tell me everything. So you've come to join her on Cosmos then?" Karis asked, when he was perfectly obvious. "That's so romantic."
Lake chuckled. "Yeah, something like that, plus it's more interesting being stellar cartographer on a starship."
"Oh I know, I used to be one . . . back on Yorktown . . . before it imploded." Karis answered him a bit more quietly.
"Awkward does not really cover it," Ledeya said shaking her head just a tad at the images that it created. How she had considered a date she did not know or remember. Ledeya glanced at Karis and wondered if that was romantic. She had not thought it that before but now she could not be so sure. They had not gone past making out so there something more and Ledeya did not want to rush things.
"Hmm, oh well. It's over and done with and hopefully it won't happen again. I think he's learned his lesson. I mean being turned down by two women within moments of each other couldn't have been good for his ego. Still can't believe he asked me like that." She shook her head and wandered back over to her work.
Lake chuckled a little bit. "I better get back to work too, both of my bosses are watching."
"Ched is persistent," Ledeya said simply as if it was just a fact that needed to be processed. "I had better go myself. I am expected at the Starbase for the final night of the conference before we head off to offer our assistance." Ledeya nodded to them both taking the hint to escape while she could.
"Have fun," Lake said, planting a quick kiss on her cheek before moving off and leaving her alone to her thoughts.
