Mission: Mission 6 - Azzia
Location: Messhall
Timeline: MD 2 08:00
1688 words - 3.4 OF Standard Post Measure

Deacon sat in the mess hall contemplating another forkful of fruit salad the chef had put together from the “variety pack” he dropped up to him, it was delicious. Deacon had selected one of the tables near the bulkhead, so he could quietly observe the ship’s mini-community that he was soon, if only temporarily, become a part of, trying to distract himself from his upcoming meeting with the ship’s engineers. He asked to meet them here, hoping the neutral ground of the mess hall would make their meeting more productive, as opposed to invading their engine room as an interloper.

Before long two women made their way over to the table, Deacon could see they were both Betazoid, One was a tawny brunette who was very striking and the other a rather fetching blond who was very... pregnant. They had to be the engineers. Deacon hoped by meeting them on the neutral ground of the mess hall Standing up, Deacon smile and said, “ Ms Kea, Ms Fenruse, Deacon Kane. Thanks for meeting me for breakfast.”

Jeassaho yawned as she sat down and looked at the man levelling him with a look that said she didn't do mornings right then and there. "You are lucky." Was what she said first before the blonde next to her smiled as she shifted her flight suit a little wrapping the arms under her bump.

"It is Selina. She's had a rough night at the opening ceremony," Selina said with a smile. "I'll get her some coffee and then she might be nice. Would you like anything?" She wondered kindly.

“And I’m good for now, Thanks,” the Rigelian replied, “and please call me Deacon.” With a nod Selina quickly went to retrieve two mugs of morning bliss, leaving him with ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ still giving him the hairy eyeball from across the table. Still, he sympathized with her, and her case of ‘engineer’s curse.’

No one else really understood what it was like having to fix the boat while everyone was on shore leave. The little time you got portside you, spent partying, trying to make up for lost time before having to run back and fix more busted equipment. As a result of the work and heavy drinking you quickly became sleep deprived and ornery, making you the true engineer cliché, a terminally angry, hard-drinking curmudgeon, who never stays out with the rest of the crew.

Before he knew it, Selina had returned with two cups of coffee and her award-winning smile. Kea looked like she could have kissed her other engineer’s feet as she accepted the steaming brew, then turned his gaze towards him. “Ok, I’ll try and make this quick,” Deacon said, “I know the premium placed on work and rack time.” He added handing the engineer’s a couple of slaved PADDs, “Your captain’s scheduled deuterium delivery in a couple days and antimatter after that. I wanted to touch base with you to make sure the this worked for.”

"We were shifts. Alpha, Beta, Gamma. Just like a normal Starfleet Vessel. It is practical." Selina said accepting the PaDD despite Jeassaho's rank in Starfleet Reuben had made her the higher position as acting Chief Engineer until she got released from this assignment in his stupid gentlemanly not wanting to cause trouble way. "Yes, this works well. Gives us time to sort the tanks out. Wow, we are really getting some quality juice." Selina glanced at Jeassaho for a moment.

“Also, I’ve contracted with your Captain for passage out of the system in exchange for helping in the repair or maintenance of ship’s systems, I was hoping to get a list of jobs from you after the deuterium delivery, if possible.”

"Why don't you do a walk around." Jeassaho finally suggested in a tone that sounded a lot more awake and less hung over. It would be a good way for the man to see just how bad some areas of the ship was compared to what he was most likely used to.

"Ok, love to see what shape the lady's in." Deacon said enthusiastically, "Let me get some gear from my ship I could be ready in about ten minutes. Where would you like to start?" then Deacpn thought about it, "Or did you mean walk about on my own?"

"Why don't you walk about and can see everything with your own eyes. I'm sure Reessem will walk with you." Selina hinted with a smirk. "She can show you the Control Room once you are finished."

Deacon’s brow furrowed as he followed Selina’s gaze. Reessem had just entered the mess. Having heard her name she glanced at them. Deacon felt his heart skip a beat when he met those hazel eyes, eyes that seemed to widen in surprise, and for the briefest instant mix of panic when she saw who he was sitting with. Deacon tore himself away from that eternal moment of staring at the administrator, trying not to look the fool. He returned his gaze to the engineer’s only to find that Jeassaho seemed paused in drinking her coffee mid-sip looking at him in the most peculiar way and that Selina’s smirk had appeared to have transformed into a full-blown adoring grin.

“Ok, I tell you what,” he said looking down at the PADD in an effort to avoid the engineers’ gaze, “I’ll go grab my gear and take a look around. I’ll meet you in engineering around 1400.” When he looked up from the PADD he found both women calmly composed, half convincing him that he was losing his mind. “Before I leave, I’ll ask Ms Nubohn if she has time to show me around,” he added trying to make tactical withdraw.

"Fine with me," Selina said already rising from the table tugging on her less than awake colleague. If anyone else had seen the fair they would have thought nothing of it but the glances between them spoke that another conversation was going on between them. "I will be there. This one will be sleeping off her hangover and whatever else she got up to." A silent look crossed between them as Jeassaho raised a hand to Reessem and waved brightly.

Deacon smiled back at Reessem and waved back as the engineers left. As they stopped to talk with her on the way out he marvelled at the enigma he knew as Reessem Nubohn. Ever since he met her he found himself humming a song, 'Something.' It was from Michelle's favorite bands, the Beatles. He'd always play it during their bridge watches, and for some reason, this one tune kept bubbling to the surface. It must have been speaking French, he rationalized. The lyrics of stayed just on the edge of his brain, but whatever they were Reessem did indeed seem to be something. She seemed to have that special kind of magic.

"Bonjour Monsieur Kane," he suddenly heard as she appeared in front of him.

"Ah excusez-moi, Mademoiselle Nubohn," he apologized, embarrassed she caught him wool-gathering, "Could you join me for breakfast?" He added in French. She looked questioningly at his empty plate and half full cup coffee, "I would like more practice in your wonderful language." he shrugged giving her a boyish grin.

As she sat down he tried to impress her with his command of her language, "Well it seems we must start our liaison right away." he said trying to look suave. The voice in the back of his head then flashed something else in French, 'double entendre'. Trying to cover himself, he blurted out, "Ah that is to say the Engineers insisted I check you out," Deacon suddenly felt his suave meter falling to less than zero, "I mean they wanted me to ask you to help check out the ship." he said slowly and distinctly as he flushed green.

The teenager looked at the man before she smiled politely. "I believe Federation Standard would be better for checking the ship out," She said blushing at what he had said to her without meaning to. She spoke Federation Standard just as well as her native language so it wasn't a bother or an issue. "What exactly are we checking out?" She asked finally sitting down with her fall tray and two mugs of coffee.

"They just wanted me to look around," Deacon said as he shrugged, "But if I were inspecting your ship, I'd start with water, life support and the secondary power systems." then a smile crossed his face. "Though honestly, I love to see if your swimming pools and sundeck still exist," he said passing the old schematic he pulled up on his PaDD.

The woman found her laughing and nodded. The Collector had kept a lot of the old features of the ship it was being discovered from when the ship was commissioned in 2243. The swimming pool and sundeck were fast becoming crew favourites. "They do indeed still exist." She didn't need to see the schematics she knew them pretty much by heart now.

He laughed with her, he couldn't help himself. "Well then, I guess that's on the list," he replied as he finally noticed the fresh hot cup of coffee she had placed next to his half-filled cold one. Picking it up he took a sip, “I didn’t thank you for this, makes me feel rude.” He smiled, a genuine smile, all pretence falling away as he took in the young woman with the old soul. He met a lot of people in his travels, enough to treasure finding the ones he wanted to understand. “Well, we know our destination.” He said trying to get his mind back on the job at hand, “Let’s see if we can find the best way to get there.”
