Friendly Infection

Alexis was sure she could hear footsteps that were not part of the now rejoined groups. She kept glancing at her Security Officer who was getting worse by the second and then her husband who was pissing her off by the second. "Anyone else hear footsteps around us?" She finally opened up about what she was sure she could hear.

"I do." Liam replied as he studied the room. "Although they sound more 'organised' if that makes sense?" he said. The pacing was almost synchronised, with no dragging or oddly spaced out.

"Oh thank god!" Aki dragged himself out of the bulkheads he and Nathan were climbing behind, ready to help the fellow officer up after him. "I was beginning to think you were gonna be one of those weird things we kept hearing back there."

Ranav took in a breath as his group finally arrived, "you found them too, like some sort of amalgamation."

As the group declared they could hear things around them and were hoping it was not more of the beast, a group burst into Engineering both pointing weapons at the others. "Who are you?" Alexis demanded levelling her rifle at the Marines.

"Starfleet Marines!" Levi barked back, his own rifle shouldered as another trooper flanked him. "Lower your weapons, now!"

Gavin, who's weapon was lowered but not set to one side, stepped forward in front of the group. Alexis may have been in charge, but the last thing he needed was someone from either side getting any trigger-happy ideas. He was calm, eyes leveled to Levi, who seemed to be the one in charge of the group. "I'm Commander Gavin Holtztenn of the USS Cosmos. We're here on mission."

Levi eased his weapon downwards most of the way. "We're on a mission too - to find your team and get you out," he explained. "Is this everyone?"

Alexis lowered her weapon enough as she took in the group properly. They were a mixture of Marine and Starfleet personnel. She did not know any of them. "Yes," Alexis commented on.

"Then saddle up, we're getting out," Levi declared, in spite of the fact that he was likely a little subordinate the others in usual circumstances, as the senior marine on-site he had a responsibility to get them back to the ship in one piece.

The physician drew in a deep breath, "other than the fact that we still don't know exactly what happened I'm in favor of that."

Gavin looked between the groups, shaking his head. "I want to know what occurred here, but crew safety is a primary priority." He looked to Levi, shoulders squaring up. "What have you discovered on your way to us? We've got crew of this Starbase who are affected... by something rather strange."

Ranav nodded as he heard the question, "we found the same thing, almost as if their entire DNA had been altered changing every aspect of them."

"I've lost at least one man to these 'things' already. I'd be happy to discuss the finer points of mad science - once we're out of this place and ready to come back with a more prepared force." Levi looked around the group. "The path isn't likely to be easy, but if we can breach the dampening field then we might be able to signal a transport."

As the group quietly weaved through the seabase trying to get back up out of the dampening field a strange sound from Lea and Halla turned just in time to get barged out of the way. "What the hell?" The Trill wondered as the Security Officer jumped at the nearest Marine sinking her teeth into him.

Levi let out a cry of pain as the teeth took purchase on his neck, just above his uniform collar. On instinct he rolled forwards, throwing his assailant off as he stumbled forward and bundled into the closest person to him, which happened to be Halla. His hands lost their grip on his phaser rifle as he put them out to stop himself from completely crushing her.

The Petty Officer in question attempted to stop the momentum but it was impossible as they tumbled forward as Lea turned to look at the rest of the group.

Alexis gulped as she looked at her Ensign. "Anyone know she had been infected?" She wondered looking at the duo that had been with her. She circled around to try and distract her but the Ensign charged at Levi and Halla making the Petty Officer grab the man she was trying to help further back.

"No." Gavin stated cooly. "But we're going to fix it. I don't believe in irreversible illnesses." Or zombies, but that was a technicality. "We get her to the ship, quarantine her before anyone else is bitten, and we determine how we solve this."

Alexis took that as an order and moved towards Lea but the infected woman changed at the Marine knocking him into a pole along with the Petty Officer who had been with him. "No!" Alexis cried as she realized a second too late what the pole was doing it was holding up a watertight door and the door was now closed locking the Marine and Science technician behind it.

"I would typically agree," the half Bolian doctor replied, "but we have to seriously consider the safety of the crew. He looked at Gavin knowing what had just happened, "we better get everyone off and take a specimen, preferably not able to attack the crew, and then work out the cure in a protected lab." The blue man grinned, "but that might require some doing."

"Well what the hell are we waiting for?" Aki asked, gesturing toward the door. "We do the weird science stuff and maybe get them outta here too. I'm not gonna wait for the zombies to come back and give us a reason to stay. Let's go!"
